Re: Religion Textbook with bad Dhammapada translation

I'd like to hear opinions on the Eknath Easwaran translation if anybody has read it. It is apparently much acclaimed, and the favored translation by the Buddhist scholars at my school. (Apparently we have them. I have not met them.) Here is a sample first verse, which is troubling becuase it looks a...

Re: Any stream-enterer here?

Yes, I know about three fetters. There is a lot of people who don't grasp at precepts & practices. Many don't have any doubts, especially folks at traditional buddhist countries. Self-identity views (lack of regarding oneself as five khandhas) are more reliable, but how can one assess them? So I sa...

Since there is not any certain definition of stream-entering That is not the case: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/glossary.html#sotapanna" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; "A person who has abandoned the first three of the fetters that bind the mind to the cycle of rebirth (see saṃyoja...

Re: Religion Textbook with bad Dhammapada translation

Yes, it's all the kind of thing I would expect from a popular books on world religions - even a popular book on Buddhism. I don't expect much from either, so am typically not disappointed. But a college textbook would (I think) need to stand up to a bit more scrutiny, and it doesn't. No reply yet, b...

Re: Religion Textbook with bad Dhammapada translation

For those of you who might wonder why I'm even bringing it up, here's a previous post on this topic: http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1844" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think I'm going to at least send the professor an e-mail.

Religion Textbook with bad Dhammapada translation

Hi folks. Haven't been posting much, as I've been very busy, back at school and being married. :) I'm taking a world religions class. We have our Buddhism chapter now. I'm mostly keeping my mouth shut. I understand it is an introduction for most of these kids and not an in-depth Buddhism class. But ...

Re: How to contemplate feelings?

Jhanic pleasure is better than sensual pleasure (food wine and women), but not as good as just dropping all of those in favor of Nibanna, and you can get too attached to any of them. It's kind of a step latter. That is my brief and crude take on the subject. Apologies if it is overly so.

Okay, but what is it that you think has been reborn each of those times?
That may require a separate thread. :)

Re: Osama bin Laden is dead

Everybody of us was a killer multiple times in former lives. Everybody of us was in hell multiple times. This may need a seperate thread, but how could you possibly know that? It's based on the reasoning that we have all been reborn countless times. I've never really seen it logically demonstrated ...

Re: Osama bin Laden is dead

Oh yay. I was wondering how long it would take before people would start to say it wasn't happening. Well, where is the real proof that what the media has said was true? Where is the corpse now to be photographed and identified by multiple and independent medical observers? Buried next to my tin fo...

Confirmed, more or less, but what we have is really bits and pieces of information. I imagine a situation like that is pretty chaotic.

Re: Osama bin Laden is dead

He deserves compassion and forgiveness, as all of us. The words are hollow. Assuming the Buddhist view of things is the way the universe opperates, what happens to him is the result of his choice. Let us hope that in that he learns something of value. As I've said, the aggressors are themselves vic...
