Re: The Pros and Cons of Mythology

Dear retro -- ... and simultaneously, the same mind that whines and complains and blames others is the very mind that may find comfort and sense and inspiration in The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path ... which, at the moment of admiring their wonders, would qualify as stories, I imagine... ...

Re: correct me, please

we know your intentions are good. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I wish I were as sure as you seem to be. :) Seriously, thanks for the response, which struck me as reasonable and open. I will do my best to comply with what I understand. And if, for some reason, I don't ... please feel free to k...

Re: The Pros and Cons of Mythology

Dear retro -- I agree with your caution about tale-telling. Many have been stung unnecessarily by the demand that they take various mythological tales as the god's honest truth. But I guess I would argue as well: Everyone tells themselves stories, whether they watch TV or not. What is this ordinary ...

Re: correct me, please

genkaku, Theravada tends to be very particular about tying everything back to the scriptures. Personal answers or anecdotes or similar type responses are fine as long as they can clearly be linked back to scripture. I know this can seem odd to a Zen practitioner, but if you are sincere about not "u...

correct me, please

I have had the experience elsewhere of being being told in various ways that I was mistaken for offering my point of view where it was not wanted. I don't want to upset anyone's apple cart, so I am asking for guidance. For example, I know little or nothing about the Theravada approach to Buddhism. T...

Re: The Pros and Cons of Mythology

Dear retro -- Perhaps you will forgive me for knowing next to nothing about Theravada approaches to mythology, but I like the questions that mythology -- which I translate as meaning suggestive stories -- pose. And so, for what it's worth .... Everyone loves a good story. Or maybe what I mean is, I ...

Re: lists

Hi Manapa -- I thought it was 84,000, but who's to quibble? :)

In any event, I was under the impression that 84- or 85,000 was, to all intents and early-Buddhist purposes, a number so large as to indicate "infinite."

Whatever the case, I would be interested in seeing the list. :)

Re: lists

And then of course, there is the list of innumerable gates of the Dharma. Anyone got one handy? :)

Sorry, Fede. My mistake.

If you want to be an aardvark next go-round, you go right ahead.

Just teasing a little.

Re: Sorry...What's the difference? (Reincarnation Vs Rebirth)

When it comes to reincarnation, I can't help but remember a contest that once ran in the magazine, "Psychology Today." Readers were invited to come up with the best scam they could think of (pretty inventive idea, I thought). The winner was someone who imagined a company in -- where else? -- Califor...

Ben -- All I could to when I saw that cake was to wonder when the speeches would let up so we could chow down.

More seriously, thanks for a tasty site to all who made and make it possible.

Thanks D. That seemed to do the trick. Now all I have to do is learn how to use my cell phone.

Re: BBCode Guide to assist with formatting your posts

Dear D -- Good to 'see' you and also to receive your assistance. Thanks. Unfortunately -- possibly due to my own ineptness -- when I copied the properties of the picture you created and then tried to substitute it in the avatar department, I got repeated messages telling me I was using an "invalid U...
