Re: Death and dying: request for resources

Hi Ben -- You probably have more than enough to shape your presentation, but your question put me in mind of an article the Zen teacher Joshu Sasaki once wrote. I can't remember if death was the focal point, but I do remember that he wrote about death to some extent. One of the things he asked for, ...

Re: Sangha or Teacher: Which is Most Essential?

Teacher.
Sangha.
Another play-in-the-sandbox dichotomy.

When I asked my teacher once what a "teacher" was, he swept up the fairy tales this way: "Except for me, everything is the teacher."

old joke

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson were worried about their two boys, Sam and John. So they went to a psychologist to explain their problem. Sam was an incurable pessimist while John saw everything in a bright and enthusiastic light. It was all too much for the Petersons. The shrink suggested that, with Christma...

Re: Was 9/11 an inside job?

I dislike conspiracy theories, but I also dislike shutting out well-argued possibilities that use evidence as a foundation.

Here is a pretty good documentary (it's in three parts) on the 9/11 tragedy.

Re: HH Dalai Lama in Australia 1-10 Dec 2009

Hi Genkaku, I sure hope she pulls through. Thanks for the story about your daughter :) But in case she flakes out, I'd want this ticket to go to use, for sure. She's been having a bad month (or couple of months) so I'm feeling a little wary about whether or not she'll keep it together to come with ...

Re: HH Dalai Lama in Australia 1-10 Dec 2009

Hi Drolma -- Take your niece, if you can. I once took my daughter, at too young an age, perhaps, to see Ravi Shankar. I really didn't mind that she was bored deaf, dumb and blind. Something sinks in irrespective of opinion and judgment, I think. This goes for both the bored-stupid and those inclined...

my big mouth

Someone posted this over at Zen Forum International and ascribed it to someone called I-tuan whom I can't seem to look up. No matter who said or wrote the words, they certainly made me smile this morning: Talking is blasphemy, Silence is delusion. Beyond talking and silence there's a way upwards - b...

"A kiss that lasts forever is a strange gift."

(A graffito I saw on a men's room wall ... but I'd love to find it in a fortune cookie.)

Re: Girl Scouts

Hi Thaibebop -- If all your daughter ever learns is to be like you, how will she ever learn how to be herself? Kids enjoy being among friends, learning new things, branching out from their previous environments. I don't think the Scouts spend 90% of their time creating lock-step Christians ... they ...
