Can I still follow the path without being buddhist/religious?

Hello, I'm not sure if buddhism with all the bowing and chanting and rituals is for me.I use to be very self reliant on inner qualities like my own virtue and kind deeds but now tried to go to external things and don't feel authentic. I don't feel really inspired when I visit temples or monasteries....

Re: Guidance on Anger

Hello friends, I need some guidance on some recurring anger. At home, our morning routines work out such that when I'm taking my morning shower, my wife is brushing her teeth, washing her face, etc. at the sink. This naturally requires my wife to turn the faucet on and off, on and off. Every time s...

Re: Jhana

Dear Akashad, I am not denying another's practice, or what works for them, I just wanted to say that I find right speech, is harder for me than accomplishing right jhana, inference being right jhana is not that hard to accomplish, as some folks imply. With that in mind... Yes I agree, samadhi can be...

Re: Jhana

Jhana as a tool of ekayana, some sweep jhana aside as too difficult, and use negative terms such as 'jhana clingers', for those who practice this path of ekayana. But the 4 rupa jhanas, when rightly practiced, constitute the 8th factor of noble Path. If one rejects these, by calling these special a...

Re: Trillions of mistakes per second when stuck in a bad mood

According to my limited understanding of the Abhidhamma, cittas arise and pass away each mind moment which is an extremely short duration of time. So being stuck in a bad mood means trillions of mistakes per second, the teaching in response to each being Majjhima Nikāya 61, Instructions to Rahula ....

Re: Aren't we losing much with attachment?

This mindful adjustment quickly alleviated the fear and restored equanimity. However, the quality of the experience has also lost much. A basic question, perhaps, but aren't we all losing much by practicing mindfulness and unattachment? For example, the experience of being gripped by fear, or overw...

Re: extreme bliss feeling without body awareness

As the title says, what kind of state of meditation is that? any sutta reference? only bliss feeling is observed and body awareness is completly lost. first vauge bliss and body feeling (little thinking like intension), then bliss and body feeling (no thinking), then bliss alone with no body feelin...

Re: Why does mindfulness cause the breathing to calm?

Dear forum Even though mindfulness is established, why does breathing lack calmness so it must be calmed? Thanks  I think because calmness is not the same as mindfulness. For example, too much calm or tranquility or concentration can lead us to the bhavanga area or sleep if it lacks mindfulne...

Re: Ordaning Now or Studying Abroad (Dilemma)

Consider visiting some monasteries while you travel. It is easy to idealize monastic life. Spend some time around monks and try following the 8 or 10 precepts for a while. Thank you very much for this suggestion. I hadn't really considered that there will be monasteries where I'm going, and a coupl...

Re: Can 'difficult external circumstances' impact on samadhi practice?

Re: What are the Benefits of Chanting?

Any thoughts about whether it is better to chant in English or Pali? I've tried both, and found chanting in English to be more useful. I prefer reading the meaning of the chant in English then chanting in pali.something about pali that has a tranquilising effect.☺ I was brought up as a Roman Cathol...
