Re: Buddhism & Big Bang Cosmology

That sounds like a cyclical understanding of the universe to me. Scientists have proposed several cyclical models of cosmology, not all requiring the destruction of the universe at the end of each cycle. Have any of them proposed a cyclical model in which destruction by fire, water or air is owing ...

Re: Theistic Belief/Believing in God/Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

If someone doesn't believe in devāḥ and celestial bodhisattvāḥ, I don't think reading the Lotus Sutra will necessarily convince them. Many people read Pali scriptures, in which the existence of devāḥ and supernatural beings is taken for granted, and read them through a lens of modernism, where thes...

All Mahayana Buddhists are Bodhisattvas, vowing to attain Buddhahood for the sake of all beings. Avalokitesvara just happens to be a very advanced Bodhisattva.

hat are to be found are accounts of the lower portions of a cakkavāḷa (a 31-plane world-system) periodically devolving ( saṃvaṭṭati ) and then re-evolving ( vivaṭṭati ), while the upper portions of the cakkavāḷa are preserved throughout... That sounds like a cyclical understanding of the universe t...

Re: Theistic Belief/Believing in God/Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

So at a deeper level, what praying to celestial buddhas and bodhisattvas does is give people the inner strength and peace to solve their own difficulties. It doesn't to me, and surely I am not the only one. The Lotus Sutra itself says that those who call on the name of Avalokitesvara will be reliev...

Re: Theistic Belief/Believing in God/Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

People don't need to think "gee, I think it is because of the bodhisatva ideals that I think that they will answer my prayers"....all they have to do is to read the stories in the lotas sutra and believe them. The altruistic intent of buddhahood in Mahayana Buddhism is why celestial buddhas and bod...

Re: Buddhism & Big Bang Cosmology

Interestingly, an oscillating universe model is taught by many scientists, which is what the Buddha also taught. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_model I'm not sure that the Buddha did teach this at all, or indeed any other form of objective cosmology. The Buddha taught that the universe has un...

There are several cyclical models for the universe that scientists have proposed. Some might be closer to what the Buddha taught than others.

Exactly.

Re: Buddhism & Big Bang Cosmology

Certain teachings of the Buddha wouldn't be true if the universe began only 14 billion years ago. I guess we could just interpret them metaphorically. Agreed. If there's a potential clash between cosmology and soteriology, then I wouldn't bother at all with the cosmology. The Buddha never claimed t...

Re: Theistic Belief/Believing in God/Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

And yet not everyone who reads those stories believes them. Why not? They're not desperate, they don't realize they're in a desperate situation. The Lotus Sutra promises that those who call on the name of Avalokitesvara will be relieved of the three poisons, and will be granted fearlessness. So at ...

If there are many world systems with intelligent life, and if the universe has existed from the incalculable past, then there have been many, if not countless, buddhas.

Re: Buddhism & Big Bang Cosmology

While mainstream science can tell us the universe expanded from a singularity, where did that singularity come from, and what existed before it expanded? The Buddhist answer might be there have been countless Big Bangs, followed by countless Big Crunches. Another Buddhist answer might be to not wor...
