Re: History of Buddhism

Any suggestions? Étienne Lamotte, Histoire du bouddhisme indien (1958); English translation: The History of Indian Buddhism , (1988). Though much of Lamotte's scholarship has now been superceded, his work is still required reading in Buddhist history courses simply because nobody has yet produced a...

History of Buddhism

I'm wondering if there is any "authoritative" book, or something close to it that accurately describes the history and spread of Buddhism, with detail about the development of early texts, new sects, etc. I hear that bhikkhu analayo is one of the leading scholars in this area area today, but I wasn'...

Bhikkhu bodhi playing piano

I recently saw a picture on Facebook of bhikkhu bodhi playing the piano. What should we make of this, since it goes against the vinaya? I've also heard a lot of criticism towards his "engaged Buddhism" since it's somewhat counter to the teachings.

What do you think?

I agree. It's really alarming they get away this. Or it will say "zero sugar added" and have fructose as one of the first ingredients.

While I'm not recommending artificial sweeteners, your concern with sugar should be it's negative health effects, not the calorie content. That isn't why it causes weight gain, necessarily.

Re: Ledi Sayadaw's take on the Abhidhamma

This isn't his translated work, but have you read "the birth of insight" by erik braun? It talks about how ledi revitalized lay interest in meditation, and was one of the first to teach abhidhamma to lay people.

Parable of man stuck in a well

I recently heard a dhamma talk where someone asked ajahn sona about a parable of a man stuck in a well. I can't remember it at length, but it was basically a simile for samsara. The man was dangling by a vine in a well, while two mice ate at the vine. There were three snakes at the bottom waiting to...

I would recommend ajahn Lee's book, frames of reference. If you write to wat metta they will send it to you. I believe it also has his meditation instructions.
