Re: Monks in private jets pass test
The Thai media is full of monk scandals at the moment, but what really cuts me is the murder of ecology monks (phra nak anuraksa) by the Thai military who resent their obstruction of illegal logging. These reports almost never appear in the Thai media due to censorship. I'm told that the preferred ...

Re: Monks in private jets pass test
In an article today they mentioned DNA tests had been done using the DNA of Mr Nenkham's parents and the results should be out tomorrow - 10th. And what is the story behing this monk with his foot on the table - photo was linked above http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/357035/monks-shopping-in-us...

Re: Phra Ajahn Mitsuo Gavesako leave the Buddhist monkhood?
Yes, I agree the Mitsuo and Nenkham matters are completely different. It is interesting, though, how fast Mitsuo married after disrobing. I have seen this happen, or similar happen, a few times with Thai monks. There is nothing wrong with this sort of thing, but I imagine the woman starts to get 'cl...

Re: Phra Ajahn Mitsuo Gavesako leave the Buddhist monkhood?
Mitsuo while a monk wrote many books which became popular. I recall one with the title "Thais are Kind". I wonder what will happen to the royalties from these books and the other wealth he built up as a monk.

Re: Chinese monk Fa Xian travelled to India seeking Buddhist scr
Faxian arrived in Sri Lanka around 406AD. Stayed a few years and then was back in China around 414AD. He took back with him a copy of the vinaya of the Mahisasaka sect - possibly from the Abhayagiri temple. Later another scholar from Sri Lanka called Sanghavarmi arrived in China to help translate th...

Re: Did the Buddha experience dukkha?
There are 10 problematic incidents in the Buddha's life that need special explanation according to the Pali version of events. These are unpleasant periods of the Buddha's life Some I can find: 1. Back aches and stomach aches and dysentery. 2. Buddha being cut by a splinter of a rock thrown by Devad...

Re: Hostility to Ananda
Somewhat related: Kassapa and Ananda – after the parinibbana , by Bhante Sujato. We’re familiar with image of Mahakassapa as a grizzly monk with a dour perspective on women, and his consequent antagonism with Ananda. I’ve just been reviewing a few of the texts that have helped create this image, an...

Re: Hostility to Ananda
Thank you for all the replies. Please keep em coming! I just found it rather strange that Ananda seems to be singled out. No other monk seems to have received the same or similar treatment and this is odd given Ananda's role in the religion. Also by the time of the council Ananda is an arahat yet is...

Re: Bhikkhus at University
The Buddhist universities still need to charge monks to attend, though there is often a discount for monks. In Thailand there are a few postgrad courses conducted in English. There is a masters degree at the MCU - Mahachulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya University http://www.mcu.ac.th/En/major/major_base.ph...
