Forest Sangha Publications

Greetings all,

I just now discovered the Forest Sangha portal Web site along with the publications section. Most of the books look like they're only available as "epub" and "mobi" files. What are these? Why aren't they in PDF format, which, I wish they'd work on putting them into.

Thanks.

Re: Hello All

Welcome to the forum, Richard. There's a Vipassana community near me, but I don't go because it's mainly only a meditation group. I definitely am a beginner, but I haven't been studying for as long as you. Again, welcome. This is a high quality forum.

Re: Disorbing

this teaching should not be available to lay people There is no esoteric teaching in Buddhism — at least not in the Theravāða. The Vinaya is open for lay people to study if they wish to. Thankfully it is open to the laity to study because I really enjoy studying the ways of the bhikkhus and bhikkhu...

What are your opinions on "A Pali-English Glossary of Buddhist Technical Terms" by Ven. Nanamoli Thera and Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi?

Meditation Types

Greetings all, Could someone please briefly describe the types of meditation the Buddha taught? I think there are three, but I'm not sure. How do I know which one is right for me? Which is one is better to learn without a teacher? Any book suggestions? Do they all count as right concentration (the e...

Orthodoxy

What is meant by "Orthodox Theravada Buddhism"? What makes one orthodox?

I did a search for "orthodox" and "orthodox theravada" and didn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks!

Re: Using Buddha Statues in the Garden

Fern, From what I understand, and I will give a reference below, is that Buddha statues (Buddharupas) should not be used as a decoration. I'm sure there are different opinions, but this is the one I go by. To me, it does seem disrespectful to use an image of our Teacher as a mere decoration. Should ...

Re: Alter/Shrine question.

I think Josh summed it up pretty well. That link he gave you is a good resource. Here's another one: http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/history/devotion/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This one has more information on how to make a little devotional service at home. They're...
