Free Dhamma Books?

Greetings all, Does anyone know of any organizations that offer Dhamma dana? I know of a few. These are great places, especially in these economic times, when some times it may be hard to afford to buy lots of books. With these groups, I always at least try to reimburse the shipping charges. The one...

Specific Buddha Paintings Information

Greetings all, I have seen these depictions of the Buddha in several forms (paper cards, posters, etc.). They are my favorite depictions of the Buddha. Recently I saw a picture of a meditation hall that had the Buddha in different poses, all in this same fashion. I was just wondering if anyone can p...

Meditation: Is it Required?

Greetings all, I was reading the Theravada section on the Religious Tolerance Web site, based in Ontario, Canada and came across this quote: "Theravada Buddhism initially reserved the practice of meditation to monks. The laity were "... encouraged to engage in merit-making activities to improve thei...

Re: Shrine Offerings

Greetings all, I thought offering fake flowers was okay. I thought I had read that it was, but I wanted to make sure. I guess it doesn't particularly matter, since there's no one (or no thing) that's going to come down and smack me in the head for offering something fake. I didn't know even temples ...

Transliterated Tipitaka

Greetings all, I found this link to the Tipitaka online that has transliterations in Roman, Devangari, Gujarathi, Tibetan and plenty of other languages. It's not much help for me, since I can't really understand what I'm reading, even the Roman. But, I thought it may be of help to some of you guys. ...

Shrine Offerings

Greetings all, I am going to be setting up my shrine very soon and I am going to keep it simple and with the three traditional offerings of light, incense and flowers. My question is, is it okay to use fake flowers if I can't get ahold of alive, fresh ones? I think the symbolism would still be there...

New Guy

Greetings all, My name is Justin and I am new to the board. I am a Theravadin Buddhist. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the Sangha. There are no monasteries or temples near where I live. And, I've really come to have a real, genuine love for the Sangha and wish to help them. I guess I can just...
