Re: Against Nāgārjuna

Thoughts? Oh, not again. “Monks, it’s not that I dispute with the world, but that the world disputes with me. A proponent of the Dhamma doesn’t dispute with anyone with regard to the world.1 Whatever is agreed upon by the wise as not existing in the world, of that I too say, ‘It doesn’t exist.’ Wha...

Re: Memorization and the Oral Tradition

Depends how humble. I can out-humble you any day. I'm the humblest guy here. No one here even approaches my level of humility. I am the Bob Ross of humility, painting masterpieces of modesty on the canvas of life, erecting a bodily edifice of diffidence and meekness inscribed into my very blood and...

Re: Memorization and the Oral Tradition

The eternal struggle. The epistemically humble cannot argue against one who has no humility in his epistemology. The epistemically humble won't argue at all. :jumping: Depends how humble. Re: Bodhicitta

Remind me, would you? Wasn't the Lotus Sutra the transition to Mahayana where they say the Hinayana doesn't have the new Sutras because they were too cowardly to stay and listen? Even Arhats? Eeek, let's just end this. It's no good to disparage the Lotus Sutra or any kind of Buddhism for that matte...

Re: What is Dhammakaya?

One can practice Yogavacara methods of meditation without accept the specific Dhammakaya methods and doctrines. The issue is they aren't based on Yogavacara. They aren't based on any kind of Buddhist precedent at all. The article I posted above is eye-opening IMO. There is nothing wrong with practi...

Re: What is Dhammakaya?

Here is a paper on the esoteric teachings of Wat Phra Dhammakāya. I would highly recommend reading this article. It is not too jargon-filled IMO.

Wat Dhammakāya almost took over the Thai State-Sangha. They are becoming a dangerous element to contend with.

Re: Semen retentive sex and Buddhist practice

we as the Sangha This could serve as a springboard for other conversations. Are you on DharmaWheel as well? In most kinds of Buddhism, Theravāda as well by extension, the lay people are not part of the saṁgha, much less the āryasaṁgha that refuge is taken in. In some kinds of Buddhism, I'm thinking...

Re: Are gods bored and can they meditate?

Every single actual Brahma is a full Buddha. One doesn't create a Universe and maintain it for hundreds of trillions of years without attaining Buddhahood. This is not actually right AFAIK. In Buddhism, the Brahmas are not ex nihilo creators. They neither create the heavens, continents, hell, Sumer...

Re: Yogācāra and Abhidhamma

Well, this is surprising. Instead of the eclectic Venerable Vasubandhu, it is Ven Maitreyanātha who is familiar with the bhavāṅgacitta, which he relays at Mahāyānasūtrālaṁkārakārikā XI.32: svadhātuto dvayābhāsāḥ sāvidyākleśavṛttayaḥ | vikalpāḥ saṃpravartante dvayadravyavivarjitāḥ || svadhātuta iti b...

Re: Yogācāra and Abhidhamma

Theravada probably did not exist then as a school and was never influential or apparently even known in northern India until after the extinction of Buddhism in India so I can only assume you are referring to the common heritage of Buddhist ideas and, of course, all Buddhists use these. AFAIK, I'm ...

Re: Bodhicitta

Buddhism is about changing the world. So is politics. I have to ask at this point: are you a Nichiren Buddhist? Do you practice with SGI? I'm not asking a "gotcha" question. I'm not going to launch into an online crusade against SGI if you are. I started with Buddhism by meeting someone from SGI. T...

Re: Bodhicitta

Once I asked a friend a deep question and He replied with: "section logical, section logical, section logical." I advise you to use your logic to figure things out in this instance, and avoid your prejudices, for they are clear hinderances to the truth you already know. No one likes having their vi...
