Re: If there was no Theravada, which tradition would you pick?

well, Chan obviously (seeing as that is my practise). Then probably Zen. Then Tiantai. Huayen Mahamudra Dzogchen Madhyamika Yogacara If none of those existed.... I would probably be a free spirit seeker, taking my inspiration from stuff like Vedanta, Daoism and Kashmir Shaivism, probably dipping int...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

when? on the 13th. May I suggest that we have a forgiveness ceremony as soon as possible. I am more than prepared to formally and sincerely publicly apologise on behalf of the Sangha and lay Buddhist community of Perth for the process that led up to the ordination, Actually debating what should of ...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

There are right and wrong ways to do things if he had done it openly from the start allot more scrutiny on the whole process would of happened, which could be argued that it would of delayed the ordination but it would of got people and key people looking at it within the Thai sangha instead of bri...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

I tend to agree with Chris. This is my worst fear with this issue, that it becomes one-dimensional, two camps: * You're for Bhikkhunis right now or you're sexist and obstructive. I don't think it is sexist, but I do think it is, however indirectly and inadvertedly, obstructive to not lend at least ...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

The timing and approach. As I said, I don't like to second-guess too much, since none of use really knows what Ajahn Brahm and the other Western Abbots are thinking. However, the way I would read it charitably on various sides is this: 1. Ajahn Brahm hoped he was famous enough that the Western Abbo...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

Hi Chris, Hello Anders, It is kind of you, as a Zen practitioner, to have an interest in this matter ~ but probably it is not seen as helpful. My conviction is holistic enough, and I have personally spent my fair share of time in forest monasteries in Europe and Thailand alike, studied their teachin...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

when Did BB say that? in this instance he removed his support because of the actions of secrecy This is from his revised response: I first want to make it absolutely clear that in principle I fully support bhikkhuni ordination. I regard the women who have taken this ordination, whether from lineage...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

Hi Anders, I think there is a difference between being committed to one's female students and genuinely working for equal rights and opportunities for them. Of course, and my impression is that the Abbots that some of us know are genuinely working for equal opportunities. Support, or not, for Ajahn...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

As I said above, I think that several people here, including Chris, Manapa, and I, have had some recent contact with Western Ajahn Chah lineage monks. I do not think that it is helpful to label such people as "lacklustre", given what I have seen of their commitment to their female students. I think...

Manapa wrote:If many are interesed pinkI will post it openly, but it is partly out of date and to another group which meant I used a stronger manner at times which is not necesarilly appropriate here.
With that qualifier, I'm sure the tone will be taken with a grain of salt then. I'd like to read it.

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

Having spent the past couple of days getting myself fully up to speed on this situation, I'd like to venture a few thoughts. My overriding impression is that of disappointment in the responses of large parts of the western forest sangha. The reaction from the Thai community is honestly not that surp...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

the genie was already out of the bottle! there were Bhikkhunis in theravada before this ordination. Has Brahms actions of secrecy and lieing made wider acceptance within the various Theravadan traditions less likely in the short run or have they solely undermined trust between members of the sangha...

I don't think that's doing people a favor. You tell people the truth they are capable of listening to.

Re: Can't trust anybody.

Oh, what a bunch of spoil-sports. qft. Badgering people into being moral rarely works for anyone. Sorry to say, but the stench of being saved reeks a bit in this thread. I'm pretty sure Individual already knows smoking weed is not an ideal virtue of a Buddhist practitioner, but that's really not th...

Re: Bhikkhuni Ordination performed - by Ajahn Brahmavamso

whatever one may think about the way Ajahn Brams has gone about this, I find myself asking if this is still a pertinent issue more than a month down the line? The genie is out of the bottle, and continuing to protest the way the bottle was opened seems to me a bit like shying away from adressing the...
