Re: Porn addict and painful and hard cleaning

Hi all, Someone posted this link recently: http://www.porn-free.org/ It seems to have a Christianity bent to it... but still some good insights and tips if you look around on the site. I think I should mention that I'm not against sexuality and think that it can be a part of healthy relationship (th...

Re: Is the Buddhasasana really in decline?

I've also heard that some attainments are no longer possible, such as arahantship, yet stream-entry still is. I really doubt this, since a stream-enterer is bound for arahantship. Hi Stephen, I agree. This logic seems a bit iffy... if there were no more arahants, but still stream-entrants, then wha...

Re: Thich Nhat Hanh translation

Another possibility, though from Majjhima Nikaya, is Anathapindikovada Sutta: Advice to A Dying Man . This translation is by Andrew Olendzki. Notice the way that he framed the table, especially the point about the consciousness not being dependent on something... though I wouldn't try to interpret w...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

Are you familiar with what kind of objects that the "mind base" would have to make contact with, for it to be called "mind consciousness?" It isn't sound, imaginary or otherwise. There could be all kinds of objects. The point is that they arise dependent on the mind, and not on one of the sense org...

Re: Pure Land Buddhism - Legitimate?

If PL Buddhism is legitimate, there is no reason for any of us to be Theravadins. I don't think that this conclusion follows... whether PL Buddhism is legitimate or not, it's still not a part of Theravada. It has no bearing on the practice (or its structure) that is taught within Theravada. Any con...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

SN 12.44, Loka Sutta: The World . The Sutta does not mention dreams nor does it say anything about what does or does not happen when sense organs are not used. If I remember correctly there is a Sutta which states that the five senses deal uniquely with their own realms and can not partake of the o...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

I don't think there is any way that the deaf person would ever say that he's "listening" to someone (that is signing) purely due to his "visual" base... because the definition of "listening" in itself isn't visual-oriented. It is derived from the "sound" base. Sorry but I still disagree, I think th...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

Namarupa and sense bases in themselves aren't necessarily based on materialism (e.g., physical sense organs)... they're broader than that. I'm not sure how a sense-base could exist without the physical sense organ - could you elaborate? Hi Spiny Norman, A deaf person is aware that there is a sense ...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

beeblebrox, You wrote, "When a person "sees" or "hears" inside a dream, that is a result of the contact in between the "sense base" and its respective "object," according to the teaching... even though a physical sense organ wasn't used, or that there wasn't a physical object." What "teaching " are...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

I think what this means is that the sense base for "sound" must be different for me and other deaf people, than what it might be for most other people. Another example is, I really don't perceive any spoken words as using a "voice"... I recognize it only when it is signed, so I end up "seeing" diff...

Re: How do you understand "contact"?

Sound: Pressure waves emanated by exterior beings, or reflected by exterior objects such as echos from canyon walls. I don't think that this is necessarily true. I'm still able to "listen" (or at least perceive that I do) even though I'm deaf. I think what this means is that the sense base for "sou...

Re: Pure Land Buddhism - Legitimate?

I'd pay attention to how the Pali Canon (along with whatever else) is being studied via the five aggregates, and then focus on how the dukkha would arise or cease due to that... that should be enough.

Hi Lotus Effect,

What I took to be Lyndon's point was that this person would have nothing to look forward to... which seems to include finding the liberation.

Re: Misunderstanding of sakaya-ditthi.

But if self can end at any time then identity view must be wrong. I think "wrong" might be inappropriate word for it... it is something that exists, after all. It's just not right for the practice. It leads to suffering when attached to, especially when it's falling apart... and then it becomes a t...
