Re: Celibacy as a lay person and kamma

Paul speaks the truth and should be regarded as a fully-liberated consciousness; i.e., Arhat.

Re: Samatha & Vipassanā

Indeed, vipassana is where Fruition lies. Calm abiding is merely there as an invitation for direct insight and, while it can be helpful, is actually not necessary!

Re: Diversity among mods

Perhaps we should all try to include our real-life names. I was hoping to be able to set my user title (not username -- the spot right below it) to my real name, but I had to settle on my signature. Pictures are optional, but I felt the need to include a body to my name and occasionally-schizophreni...

Welcome! Isn't meditation pleasurable? As long as our bodies are safe and sound, we can do whatever we want with that mind of ours...

Re: Is hatred always bad, if you hate what should be hated?

There is one being I hated and wanted to see die more than anything, ever. That being is Satan. The devil himself. I also got royally pissed off at my mother for a while, but that eventually passed.

Is hatred for the devil righteous?

Re: Stream-entry: Would you know?

I don't mean to be too blunt (and this may come off as a little rough), but stream entrants are surer about their stream entry than they were that they lost their virginity, right when it happened. There is absolute, indefatigable certainty.

Re: My heart stopped while meditating (seemingly). What happened?

It could have been that you slipped into a brief period of samadhi, the stilling of bodily formations and the arising of single-pointed concentration. Deep samadhi can be cultivated to result in enlightenment but it must be ok to lose all awareness of the body. Very scary at first, but then you'll s...

Re: What is schism?

Ultimately, there are no schisms, there are only degradations of the original teaching. Which one is the original teaching is not to be argued, but known by the wise.

Re: What is the difference between Jhana and Samadhi?

Samadhi is the continual arising of single-pointed concentration.

Jhana's are pleasurable states that can distract the mind and lead one out of samadhi.

Do not attach to any of the jhanas; ultimately, they are transient. Stick to maintaining samadhi.

Re: Hello, about my past

With kindness, I suggest you see a therapist. Thanks, I will see her again. I actually did tell her already about this act, and she did not respond to me with anything at all regarding it. It's almost as though she passed it off. Easy to do if you're not the one who smashed his head! Oh, by the way...

Re: Hello, about my past

I was amazingly uninjured. My head went right through and then I carefully removed it after turning it around with my head through the window. My parents did not get my any sort of therapy or help at the time. I have strong, strong memories of this. This was well after I was old enough to store memo...

Hello, about my past

Hello all! I haven't made an introduction thread for me yet, so here it goes. I have been a Buddhist for several years now (I'm 33) and was happy with it for awhile, but the past has come up and I don't know how to get past it. Here goes: when I was about 4 and a half years old, I, by myself, smashe...

Re: How many of you are solitary Buddhists?

Hello, No_Mind, I am a solitary Buddhist by choice. Having gone forth, it is often difficult to take part in the lay-person's world, but there's no need to resign myself to monkhood. The 2 fruits I enjoy the most are by far: 1) freedom from death 2) freedom from old age I have avoided the sex act my...
