Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

When it's not even clear what the path is, how can one check whether it works or whether it can be verified ... This is not true, there is at least one Path, the direct Path to purification of beings, the four frames of reference. This is one path which can be verified by one who threads it. How ca...

Re: Buddhavacana

Well what can be the Buddha's teaching other than the early Canon. I think it is agreed upon that the early Suttas are the Buddha's teaching. So this alone gives a certain standard of measure, everything else has to at the very least not contradict it. Afaik the Abhidhamma does not contradict the S...

Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

The idea that the Tipitaka is the teaching of the Buddha is a Theravadan idea. It's not universal. I have known Buddhists from Zen traditions who are sure they are followers of the Buddha, but who explicitly rejected the Tipitaka. How am I supposed to know who is true to the Buddha and who isn't? T...

Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

A Dzogchen practitioner will say the same thing as you do above; their ideas about the Path are, of course, quite different than yours. The thing is that it's not clear what exactly the Buddha's teaching is. Witness the Mahayana - Theravada schism, the countless lineages and schools within Buddhism...

Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

Of course it's a direct quote. We could also quote passages from the Bible or the Koran that speak with the same certainty. It's just that they speak about something else as the ultimate goal. Well the thread is about Nibbana, i don't think quoting the Bible would have the same effect. I am not sur...

Re: Have any Mahayana Buddhists attained Nirvana today?

It is not because of a sense of supremacy that i go there, it is honestly just concern for people. I don't rejoice at the thought of this, it pains me to think that people who have devotion for the Tathagata and love for teachings might fall into wrong view because of circumstances and i honestly do...

Re: Have any Mahayana Buddhists attained Nirvana today?

Telling our fellow Mahayanists that they "might go to hell" will not be tolerated. If the scriptures explicitly say it, then post the scriptures instead of putting it into words that would disparage other Buddhists. How could scripture say it explicitly when it was written long before existence of ...

Re: Have any Mahayana Buddhists attained Nirvana today?

I merely pointed out that Theravada does not accept existence of several Nibbanas and implied non-acceptance of Sutra. Also i pointed out that proclaiming what has not been said by the Tathagata as that which is proclaimed by Tathagata constitutes Slandering the Tathagata and i said that those who s...

Re: Have any Mahayana Buddhists attained Nirvana today?

The schism that occurred and non-acceptance of Sutras by the Arahants of the past and the implications of the non acceptance of the Sutra. THAT is the connection to the "Other Path". However SDC wont let me speak about it so lets pretend there was no schism, that Theravadins far more knowledgeable t...

Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

That misses the point, as it takes for granted that people believe or have enough faith in what you're saying above, and that it is for some idle reason that they don't act the way you seem to think they should. It is not me saying it, it is direct quote from the Discourses other than the small com...

Re: Why 95% of us are not going to reach Nibbana. (Unless we do something about it.)

Afaik from a reputable source based on atleast 400+ meditators, it has been estimated that about 4% of those undertaking intensive practice reach Stream Entry. Therefore i am inclined to think that your numbers are way off. Id say there are few swimming in the right direction, most swim around close...

Re: Explaining Dhamma Intellectually

What leads you to think that there is an eye? Isn't it seeing which leads you there? If you did not see would you think that there was an eye? chownah yes it is because of the arising of seeing that we postulate the existence of the eye, Seeing depends on it, it also depends on "Light" [1] and cons...

See the Sedaka sutta: "Monks, the establishings of mindfulness is to be practiced with the thought, "Ill watch after myself." The establishings of mindfulness is to be practiced with the thought, "Ill watch after others." When watching after yourself, you watch after others. When watching after oth...

Re: Explaining Dhamma Intellectually

Part 2: This turned out to be more difficult than i expected but i am not afraid to try to explain how i understand the Dhamma as simply as i can, in more or less my own words. So what is "The Eye"? It sees, it does not hear, it does not taste, it does not think, it does not smell, it sees. It is fo...
