Re: Aggregates v. clinging aggregates

Do you agree that the cause of suffering is clinging? :) If so, clinging to aggregates (clinging to anything) can lead to suffering -as everything is impermanent. The purpose of buddhist practice is to relieve suffering, be relieving the source of suffering, which is clinging. Hope that clarifies. w...

Donations to Meetirigala Nissaranawanaya meditation centre for building their meditation centre: "Dear all,   It is with great joy that I write to all of you to announce that we are ready to start stage 2 of the lay Meditation Hall. We have finalised the stage 2 plan with the architects (Loci) and p...

Re: How important is keeping Precepts?

Thanks everyone for your posts. Apart from what has been said so far (with which I agree with), I find the more I have an attitude of renunciation, respect, gratitude, purity etc the easier it is for me to keep the precepts. If I am on a hedonistic bent then it is a lot harder. Also I find having go...

Indeed. If purifying the mind has an opportunity to grow, then it should be persued. A moment later, if vipassana has an opportunity to grow that should be persued. I guess this method is particularly good for those witha scattered mind.

Re: the great rebirth debate

i guess someone needs to get this ball rolling  personally i believe in literal rebirth. it's just i don't care that much about it. and i don't think it's a necessity. i feel the non literal moment to moment view of rebirth is far more important to focus on in terms of one's daily practice...

Hi Kim,

Not to be disrespectful of the bhikhus and bhikkunis and others on the path to becoming fully ordained (anagarika- 'home-less') etc, I agree that such a distinction would be a useful one.

Re: Devala's Rice Cart

Hi vishy89 Hmm not sure whether it is from a Theravada sutta or jataka tale- the introduction states that it first originated in Japan, a Mahayana country. But I can't be certain of course. Maybe there is someone who has read the book or has at least skimmed the online version who may know.. With me...

Hi Alobha, As they say 'it's all in the wrist' :D "Suppose that there is a foolish, inexperienced, unskillful cook who has presented a king or a king's minister with various kinds of curry: mainly sour, mainly bitter, mainly peppery, mainly sweet, alkaline or non-alkaline, salty or non-salty. He doe...

Hi Retro, When I googled 'google saffron' I got this: "Google Saffron (Theravada Search Engine) http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx...A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more." Re: Meditation focused groups

Hi ChristopherXX

The Galduwa tradition is a similar meditative tradition found in Sri Lanka. Nissaranawanaya is a branch centre which has western monks ordaining. They follow either the Mahasi or U Panditha style with Jhanas thrown in, depending on your teacher.

How important is keeping Precepts?

Hello All,

I wondered how important keeping precepts was, in your personal practice- also it would be good to know why you give it little or high importance.

Thank you

Hi befriend Being aware (mindful) of the mind and emotions can be helpful to keep track of their fluctuations but also to control the unhelpful ones as and when they arise (see the link to vitakkasantana sutta): http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.020.than.html" onclick="window.open(this.h...

Re: Dana and Sila - useful/missed Forums?

Create and they will come! I personally think that a forum on sila is a good idea- it does send out a positive signal about sila and brings it to people's attention as an important area of practice. We could assemble the presently available threads under this forum (vegatarianism, killing, sex etc)....
