One meal a day and gallstones

Hello, In medicine, it is held that eating only one meal per day is a risk factor for gallstones. This is also what I was taught and repetedly told in my training to become a dietitian. However this has usually been obseved in overweight patients, as people who try to restrict their meals to only on...

Re: Can I start practising on my own?

Hi again, Glad to see that my thread has led other beginners to share their experience. So far I feel that getting familiar with buddhism, even at a basic level, requires a huge amount of knowledge acquisition. I stopped counting the number of hours spent reading and I am still nowhere near having c...

Re: renunciation starve craving

Yes, if one stops feeding the defilements they'll eventually stop coming around. However I don't think renunciation's primary purpose is to starve out the defilements... If you eat that extra ice cream, mindfully, are you sure you'll eventually decide to stop taking that extra ice cream? Even if yo...

Re: First visit to a temple

I can't imagine calling up a church to ask if the priest charges for personal advice... likewise maybe it's just me but I find it a bit awkward to phone this monk and ask him that. I'd much rather know how it goes according to other people's experiences :)

First visit to a temple

Hello, I am thinking of visiting a theravada buddhist temple in Geneva, it is led by Ven. Tawalama Dhammika, from Sri Lanka. It seems to be quite small as it is set up in a regular house in a residential area. As this would be my first time going to a temple, is there anything I should know about et...

Beginning meditation: how often?

Hello, I am just starting out experimenting with vipassana, and as a beginner, I am very excited about it and keep finding occasions in daily life where I could try to apply it. I'd like to know the opinion of more advanced practitioners: as a beginner, is it better for me to limit myself to a few m...

Re: Happy distractions

Thank you. I am trying to apply Ven. Gunaratana's simplified Vipassana method. I'm really just starting though so I have probably missed a detail or two. Or three... I do have lavender inside the appartment and a breeze carried it to the living room where I was trying to meditate. So I tried to do t...

Happy distractions

Hello, If I'm practising vipassana and I'm suddenly distracted by something very nice (last time, it was a nice scent of lavender that crossed the room), how should I deal with it? Should I treat it just like pain or worry, ie. observe it and let it go without involvement? that's what I tried to do ...

Re: Home made yogurt is very easy.

I used to make yogurt all the time! it's much healthier than milk since its filled with probiotic bacteria. But if you're concerned about fat, dont be! milk fat is healthy in moderation. these days I make a lot of kimchi, which is also very easy, inexpensive, and super healthy Plus the bacteria eat...

Can I start practising on my own? II

{from http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=24132 } Thanks again everyone! When I say overwhelming, I mean that I can't sit and focus on my breathing for more than 2 min and 47 seconds, that's what my watch told me last time I tried, after I sat for what felt like a century. That's current...

Re: Can I start practising on my own?

Thanks everyone for your input! I've started reading the link provided by Thisperson, and I already feel overwhelmed by the difficulty of vipassana. I have read the sutra that talks about reaching enlightenment in 7 days if you apply all the aspects of vipassana, and I got high hopes... but maybe I ...

Re: The Dangers of Eating Late at Night

In my opinion this doctor's advice is useful for people who have reflux issues. This is not everyone's case however. Some people in my family have it and need a low-fat dinner with little fluid before going to bed. I personally never have that issue, no matter how huge my dinner is. What is a common...

Re: Why I get a headache when I eat chocolate?

Hello,

Eating chocolate releases serotonine in the brain, and this can cause migraine in migraine-prone people. It is best to simply avoid it (same goes with wine for some people too). There are many types of foods that can trigger a migraine, but each individual has their own triggers.

Re: Moderation in eating: Social eating

Hello, I hope I'm not intruding (as a newcomer who doesn't know much about buddhism), I just wanted to make a few comments: -did you say you only eat one meal per day? If that is the case, in case you don't know, eating only once a day is a risk factor for gallstones, as your gallbladder empties its...
