Re: Can I still follow the path without being buddhist/religious?

Hello, I'm not sure if buddhism with all the bowing and chanting and rituals is for me.I use to be very self reliant on inner qualities like my own virtue and kind deeds but now tried to go to external things and don't feel authentic. I don't feel really inspired when I visit temples or monasteries...

Re: What depend it on how good i suceed to follow the eightfold path?

Effort is very important. But what is the condition for effort? why do I make efforts on one given day but not the next? If effort is conditioned by motivation then the same question arises: what determines motivation? is it something I can actually control? why was I motivated yesterday but not to...

Re: Chanting suttas from memory from past life

In the Muslim world, it's not unheard of to have 6-year old kids who can recite the WHOLE Qur'an by heart. A child's memory is like a sponge, so if there is any particular feat in this story, I would not say it is the strength of this kid's memory or the lack of mistakes, because all this is pretfy ...

Re: Accepting pain and avoiding it at the same time

Thanks, actually it makes perfect sense and my question was a bit silly. It would be careless not to relieve your back when you know it's already worn-out and you'd like to continue using it for a little while longer.

Accepting pain and avoiding it at the same time

Hello, I've read several times on this forum that the Buddha had back pain toward the end of his life and that he would rest his back on some support to ease the pain. I have also read that pain and suffering are like two arrows, non-awakened people are pierced by those two arrows while the awakened...

I subscribed to that thread thinking I would learn something interesting. What a disappointment and a waste of time.

Re: giving alms to monk and the poor

Yes, giving to the poor is less merit than giving to monks and nuns. What will the poor do with the money? Buy some food, pay the rent, just the basics. It's good, but just basic living. What will the monks do with the gifts? Work towards enlightenment, spread the teachings. Very very good! Meaning...

Re: Idealism

P1) An apple is experienced as hard, soft, sweet etc. P2) Outside of these sensations nothing can be said of the apple. C1) Therefore, all we can know of the apple (and other objects) are its mental phenomenal qualities. C2) Therefore, we cannot speak of anything apart from these qualities/sensatio...

Re: Idealism

Everything you have described here is a mental event. Yes but that was not my point. My point is that they have absolute consistency. Which your mind is incapable of, as demonstrated by the countless lapses and mind bugs you experience in daily life. I think you are making an error in logic here. I...

Re: Idealism

to distinguish between reality and hallucination as they are pretty much the same thing the main difference being a subtle shift in the chemical functioning of the brain. Also, there is the quandry "am I a grasshopper dreaming about being a man or a man dreaming about being a grasshopper". I disagr...

lostitude Yes it does. If that's how you participate in what you describe as a debate, I can save my energy too. I’m afraid it doesn’t since you only know those concepts through ...mind. Yes for those scientists there is no question that what they know about deep space is real. That's what I'm talk...

Re: Idealism

What laws exist in this world. How is two or more people viewing, feeling, smelling etc the same event and describing it as the same event explained. What's the mechanism. I think that's precisely the kind of situation warranting the acceptance of matter as a basis to describe how this works. From ...

Re: Idealism

We have never been in deep space, yet we know huge amounts of information about it. Same goes with mental observation of outer phenomena. Appealing to deep space doesn’t discredit idealism. Yes it does. If that's how you participate in what you describe as a debate, I can save my energy too. I mean...

Re: Visual being restore after blinded

I personally reversed my vision from -7 to -3 in a span of 5 years, mostly with diet and pixel pushing. So I don't doubt it's possible. I'm interested. What do you mean by pixel pushing? Also, I don't know how old you are, but if you happen to be over 35, can you be sure your gain is not simply due...

Re: Idealism

Lostitude That's not true. As I said before, the very fact that there is unfallible consistency in the world we experience is evidence supporting the reality of matter. And conversely, this same observation is pretty conclusive evidence that the reverse view does not make sense. Your experience of ...
