Re: Everlasting Happiness ... not?

Is it also possible to realise both of these statements through the jhanic experience? Or did he realise these because he was a special beeing with an extraordinary experience of samsara? both. the highest samsaric formless realm meditation gets you to the level called 'peak of samsara' where all o...

Re: Why care about kamma & rebirth if there is no "I"

If what we know as "I" is just a product of the continuous interaction of the 5 Aggregates and the "I" that is reborn is really a different "I" produced again, by the continuous interaction of the aggregates, not exactly. it is not the case that first there are the collection of aggregrates and the...

Re: Weirdest experience so far.

But I guess the more accurate thing would be to ask; What is causing the feeling? What coyote said might be something. when your mind is in the desire realm you are accompanied by all your desire realm suffering, namely all the mental and physical stress of living in a screwed up world with a screw...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

no illegal downloading does not. poor people must have access to that material as well. if they do not and are forced to download it illegally, then this is only because government has failed to procure relevant taxes to enable universal access. What, exactly, is so necessary about these materials ...

Re: Problems with no-self

if the person is equivalent to the parts then since those parts are momentary (ie. they cannot magically endure into a second moment) the person too must end at that time You are right about equivalency to the parts. But what if some posit a self that is NOT equivalent to momentary parts, but has t...

Re: Interesting interview with Sam Harris on meditatio

Here's one way of describing the experiment: Pay close enough attention to the nature of your own mind--to the flow of thoughts, moods, sensations, and perceptions in the present--and you can notice that the feeling of being a self, an ego, a thinker of thoughts in the midst of experience, is an il...

Re: Problems with no-self

because then you are asserting a person who is independent of its parts. in other words you are asserting a self to persons. Why can't one posit a self ( in a sense of empiric person such as: John or Jack ) that cannot be without its parts, but its parts can change like parts of a river. if the per...

Re: Does exist life after death for Buddhism

'you' are a particular set of mental dispositions and habits in a human mind. just as your name will end, the thing that that name refers to, namely those mental dispositions in your human mind, will also end. however due to causes and conditions the final moment of mind in this lifetime will act as...

Re: Problems with no-self

Why can't we say that Self has the body, feelings, etc which change? Even though these change, it is still the same person. Jack doesn't become John the next moment, Jane the third moment and Andrew the fourth moment. There is continuity of person from cradle to grave even though body and specific ...

Re: In simple Terms

Hee, hee. Does this make the Theravadins quasi-Madhyamakas? Or worse, might that be why Karunadasa has suggested elsewhere that the Theravadins "flirted" with Idealism? not even slightly. the wrong appearance of 'own-nature' being denied here is something extremely coarse. for example chairs appear...

Ah, so you plainly expose your bias. i am suggesting that you should present your position in a graded manner that makes sense and is of use to ppl. . . . another cool part of studying the indian tenet system presented by ppl like Bhavaviveka . . . . Again, you expose you bias annd your willing ign...

Re: something endures unchanged for at least a certain interval

Obviously "No ultimately existent ontological realities" is an ontological claim which is unnecessary and cannot be established. thats not true even if pretend that 1) we have no ignorance 2) our ignorance does not pertain to objects and other people this is because we are part of the world and so ...

Re: something endures unchanged for at least a certain interval

My impression from listening to Ven Nananada's Nibbana Sermons is that, though his angle is certainly conceptual proliferation, being fooled by the movie or the magic show, he seems careful not to fall into nihilism by specifically denying the existence of anything in particular. It seems to me tha...
