Re: the great vegetarian debate

I do not believe that being a vegetarian reduces suffering. This is faulty understanding of buddhadhamma. Follow please: It is taught in Theravada that kamma is the single-most factor determining the condition of rebirth (see abhidhamma for blow-by-blow description). Therefore if it is the fruiting ...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

Eh, if all the chickens currently in captivity were released tomorrow, there would be a lot of happy dogs, wolves and coyotes. Then no more chickens. They cannot survive in the wild. In my opinion, being a vegetarian does not eliminate suffering. This is self-congratulatory delusion. All sentient be...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

To all, I was the moderator of the vegetarian forum of e-sangha for almost four years, and it was easily the bitterestly-contested area on that entire website. We moderators had to take more disciplinary actions, suspend more members ,and delete more posts than on any other section, and from both om...

Re: Coffee may lower suicide risk by 50 percent

Just for the heck of it, and for the sake of scholarly integrity,I went without coffee for ten days. I am pleased to report there was absolutely no effect on my behavior whatsoever, nor did I commit suicide. At least I think I didn't. I may be a ghost, however. Anyway, I consider the issue settled a...

Re: I'm often sleepy! What i doing?

Sleep need varies from person to person. Some people need as much as nine hours sleep to feel rested. Allergies can also make you feel tired all the time and especially in the morning, along with sore joints.

Re: Listening to gossip

Most people's lives are so uninteresting that whenever I'm in a situation where people are talking about others, I tune out and go to my happy place (These days, usually the Lyric Opera of Chicago). I couldn't care less who's sleeping with whom; who got fired and why; myriad snippets of social polit...

Re: Electrical Signatures of Consciousness in the Dying Brai

Furthermore, the authors observed nearly identical patterns in the dying brains of rats undergoing asphyxiation.
:(

The specious conclusions gleaned from this study isn't worth the implemented cruelty.

Re: Coffee may lower suicide risk by 50 percent

Hi Ben, I began work on LIVE BAIT just before I relocated to Knoxville, the town on which Adoration TN is based. Moving 400 miles cross country has been an exercise in adjustment. I'm still unpacking. I have been feeling the urge to write again since reading The Cassandra Clare series The Mortal Ins...

Re: Coffee may lower suicide risk by 50 percent

If coffee disappeared from the planet tomorrow, I would commit suicide.

Re: Is your partner/spouse a non-buddhist?

Amen, Ben. My last wife was a Buddhist, but was at heart completely unhappy, and she drifted further and further away from me until we were living like roommates. Except my roommate yelled at me if any of my stuff was lying around. :D I hope without me she can live the life she wants to live and fin...

Re: chafing problem

Women can also become afflicted by the tinea cruris, the fungus responsible for jock itch. But with women it probably has a more genteel name, like pudendal pruritis. Isn't Samsara grand? :jumping:

Re: chafing problem

Yes, there is a simple solution. Please don't think I'm being sarcastic when I tell you of this. When I worked as a groundskeeper in high school, I noticed one of the supervisors, when his shirt rose over his waistband, wore a unusual garment. I asked "Curly, why are you wearing panty hose?" He said...

Re: jock itch

Are you sure it's jock itch and not chafing? If it only comes up when walking could be the latter.
