Happy birthday, Ben. May this be a year of peace and prosperity. And body joints that still function like a young man's.

Re: Public group meditations...?

I think your commitment to Mr. Goenka is to not attempt to teach that type of meditation. He fervently believes that technique cannot be taught in less than 10 days. I agree. When my workplace asked me to lead a beginners meditation group, and considering the above mentioned commitment, I solved the...

Re: Didn't get charged for service

I agree with all of the moral encouragement offered, but I see a practical issue too: I would not want to get hit with that bill at a moment I was not expecting it. Better to settle your debts while you are still tracking them, then be surprised by them when you least expect it...

Re: Letting go or taking control?

I think it is worth considering the intended audience of each video clip. Both teachers are abbots at monasteries, and both teachers teach to lay people. The Ajahn Brahm clip is from his weekly podcast that has an international following of lay people, most are probably casual meditators. The Ajahn ...

Re: Did Christianity "borrow" from Buddhism?

I'll throw in with an unconventional source: "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal", by Christopher Moore http://www.amazon.com/Lamb-According-Childhood-Christopher-Oct-23-2007/dp/B009CUJLYK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366915434&sr=8-2&keywords=christopher+moore+lamb It's a hilario...

Re: Mahayanists and the historical record

Jack, I have been asking the same question as the OP for years. (I appreciate how gracefully you have tread on this topic.) One answer I received was especially helpful for my understanding, I don't know if this helps you with yours: Buddha (Gautama Buddha or Shakyamuni) taught using many metaphors,...

DanieLion, were you ever a member of the OTO or participate in any of their festivities/ ceremonies/ rituals? Just curious.

Re: S.N Goenka

This seems odd to me. If its true that Non Buddhists(people who do not go for refuge to the three Jewels) are teaching, I think that may be fair grounds for not regarding them as Buddhist teachers much less "Theravada" teachers. There is more misinformation in this thread then useful information. A...

Re: Buddhism & Alcohol

Well, I also suggest this site: http://www.drinkerscheckup.com/index-From-SMARTRecovery.cfm Take a quick survey about your drinking behaviors, and it will give some feedback. If the OP concern is main reason for quitting alcohol is because I believe I may be unpleasant to be around when I am drunk a...
