Re: Getting over a bad past?

Guilt is just dhammas, happiness is just dhammas, sadness is mere dhammas, feelings are dhammas. They are all there to be known and insighted when they arise. To think any of them are preferable objects is not understanding their inherent anatta nature: to wit they arise because they are conditioned...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better

Hi Certainly. I understand the Classical Theravada approach to be that Tipitaka has precedence over Commentary, so the analysis of scholars such as Bhikkhu Bodhi that discusses apparent contradictions between the two are an important part of developing our understanding of Theravada. :anjali: Mike ...

Re: Is force/violence ever acceptable?

Funnily enough I helped with bringing a thief down if a couple of years ago. He knocked down an old lady and grabbed her handbag. One large gentleman ran after him and I followed until the big man brought him down. He then asked me to hold him while he went back for his children. I put a hold on him...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better

Can anyone who agrees with the comments made by the member quoted in the opening post give any examples of these failings in the Commentaries?

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better

A member here wrote this damning putdown: It's also not uncommon to find quite dubious etymologies of particular terms and an obvious lack of understanding of canonical metaphors, and so on. Could I ask for some evidence of their lack of homogeneous content. I dont think its damning. I dont think i...

Re: The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better

Greetings Robert, Could I ask for some evidence of their lack of homogeneous content. I'm not au fait with the specifics (as I've only read one of the two texts cover-to-cover) but supposedly the Vimuttimagga and Visuddhimagga are not always in in alignment, despite the latter being in some way app...

The Commentaries are unreliable: I know better

A member here wrote this damning putdown: The commentaries and the Visuddhimagga are not canonical. Moreover, the commentaries do not present a homogeneous doctrine. It's not uncommon to find multiple opinions presented regarding a particular canonical passage, etc. It's also not uncommon to find qu...

... however he is correct , according to theravada tradition , that there cannot be any perception of rupa while in any Jhana. Where in the Theravada tradition (with the possible exception of the Visuddhimagga ) is this view promulgated? As it is certainly not promulgated in the suttas. And since t...

I disagree with all the points that you say ven. Brahmavamso makes, however he is correct , according to theravada tradition, that there cannot be any perception of rupa while in any Jhana.

Re: SN 35.23 Sabba Sutta: The All

The phase viññanam anidassanam has been explained by the pali attakattha and tika. Suan Lu zwa, a Burmese pali scholar writes: "Tattha viññatabbanti "Viññanam" nibbanassetam namam,.." "There, to be known specially, so (it is) "Viññanam". This is the name of nibbana." And Kevatta Sutta Tika further e...

Re: Fluttering eyelids

It means the way to determine if one is on the true path of vipassana is if ones eyelids flutter while meditating. However, there is another tradtion that claims it is about flickering,( see nibs above) not fluttering. I straddle the fence on this advanced point , after all it might be only a semant...

Re: Fluttering eyelids

If you meant flutter as something like beating or pumping, I gotta tell you. It is really beneficial. It happened to me back when I stared out meditation on watching the breathing, without having knowing what is the in-depth way of vipassana meditation. My eye lids started to "flutter" and by then,...

Re: Actors go to Hell?

There's something wrong with this sutta. By the same reasoning, and much more likely due to the intensity of the lust, a person who has sex frequently with his/her partner, would cause lust in the partner leading the former person to hell (the hell of sex). . Good point. I must try and dampen my lo...
