Re: How to read the Pali Canon

Freedom wrote Now I am glad that I do not need to explain what I know. Take a look. It helps to check out another person's investigations, another point of view. I think you already have a very good understanding of the Dhamma. Different people may have different understanding of the same Sutta dep...

Dear Freedom: Here is the link to Samudaya sutta SN 47.42. https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=43033. The third comment on the first page gives a synopsis on how suffering originates. A link to Ahara sutta "Son's flesh" https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=44894 It is usefu...

Re: How to read the Pali Canon

Dear Freedom: What was in Buddha's mind, front and center? It was the Origination of suffering? How does suffering originate? How is suffering (this agitation, this restlessness this anxiety, that underlies even our happiest moments) eliminated? Once one learns where to read the most direct answers...

Re: How to read the Pali Canon

How do we get rid of the "All?" How does the word strike my contemplative mind, when it is free of distractions? when the thought is least clouded? Does it lead to my emancipation? With Love :candle: This is a complicated topic, and it does not relate to the OP, so it is better to have a ...

Re: How to read the Pali Canon

In short, take what works for us at this time according to our current understanding level, and leave others there but do not reject them. But the Buddha clearly rejects 'wrong view'! :meditate: We do not reject does not mean that we accepted it. It simply that we can not verify it now because of o...

Re: How to read the Pali Canon

EBTs: Early Buddhist Texts :meditate: I prefer to call the texts as Suttas. If they do not conflict with others and they make sense to me then I use them for now to see if I can apply them in my practice and test their results. If I do not understand them or I am unable to put them in practice, I p...

Re: The horrors of war

We normally do not accept the evil out there, but we are pleased with the evil inside us. Whenever we see the evil out there, we often do not see the evil that is arising inside us. Moreover, we do not see that the evil out there actually comes from the evil inside each of us.

Re: Does metta more accurately mean goodwill or loving-kindness?

Do you mean metta is like love? Do you think it's about doing everything in one's power to save someone from suffering? Do you think that metta is but a better, more refined type of love, one which is loyal and selfless like mother's love? Of course mother's love is a good thing. But I don't think ...

Re: Does metta more accurately mean goodwill or loving-kindness?

I do not know much Pali, so I understand metta based on its context.
In my own understanding, metta is unconditional love. This is spiritual love, not mundane love.

I explained this here: metta

Re: The Buddha was an androgynous

I read in another forum , first the monk said Buddha was an intersex 🤪 . The Great Man actually isnt Fully a Man . :o But now a nun said Buddha was a androgynous ~ a perfect human . :rolleye: This is very funny , especially coming from Theravada monastics mouth . The question is , if that is true t...

I will disregard such complaints in any case. - If you read my writings, take whatever makes sense, and don't get agitated over what you don't...

Re: Anatta negates Atman, right?

It's complicated. Actually, not that complicated, but a lot of debate around it, because anatta is a difficult concept to comprehend. There is no self or soul in Buddhism, but we feel like we do exist, not just in form, but in personality, unique traits, etc, something lasting beyond mere moments. ...

Re: Anatta negates Atman, right?

that's simply his opinion. the text says what it says "Consciousness that is invisible, infinite, entirely given up" is the consciousness that has its object as the infinity and nothingness. It is still a dependently arising consciousness. Its base is the mind-base and its objects are the...

Re: Anatta negates Atman, right?

You may think that is a special consciousness that is beyond all consciousnesses. However, that is simply your view. Notes 1. Viññanam anidassanam This term is nowhere explained in the Canon, although MN 49 mentions that it "does not partake in the allness of the All" Kevatta Sutta This i...
