Re: New Dhammapada Translation

Here's one review . It looks promising: For instance, in “Happiness,” one gains insight into the backstory of this verse: “The victor breeds hatred;/ The defeated sleeps in pain./ The calmed one sleeps happily,/ Leaving behind victory and defeat.” (#201) Dr. Roebuck’s annotation explains how Kosala...

New Dhammapada Translation

I see there is a new translation of the _Dhammapada_ by Valerie Roebuck. Has anyone seen reviews of it, or have any comments regarding it?

Thanks.

Re: Having put aside covetousness and grief....

I agree with the sayadaw's translation and don't think that he is ignoring the grammatical form. In a sentence that comprises an absolutive like vineyya or vinayitvaa followed by a finite verb, there are several possibilities as to how the actions denoted by the two verbs might be temporally relate...

Nope, never touch the stuff. By far the easiest of the 5 precepts for me to keep, as I have always had a dislike of booze.

Re: WOW! SO MUCH!

However, another approach would be to concentrate on reading the early chapters of BB's book on living a better life, etc, and leave the more technical topics aside for a time. It is clear from reading the Suttas that the Buddha didn't teach the more advanced teachings until the audience was well v...

Re: WOW! SO MUCH!

For me, Bhikkhu Bodhi's collection has much broader coverage and diversity than anything else I've seen. Suttas about "mundane" topics such as how to live a good life, how to respect parents, how to look after spouses on up to Suttas about kamma, meditation, and liberation. Also, it has a lot of co...

Re: WOW! SO MUCH!

A simpler intro would be Ven. Nyanatiloka's "The Word of the Buddha":

Cyber Monks

Here is something which I find interesting: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bhikkhu-Bodhi/48683217090?_fb_noscript=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I think there are several other monks on Facebook, either directly or indirectly. Here is another example: http://www.facebook.com/people/...

Where is Ven. Dhammanando?

Haven't seen anything from the Ven. Dhammanando for over a month now. And many (most?) of his posts for some weeks before that were limited to the "Word Association Game".

Anyone know where he is / what has become of him?

I just found this: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/khantipalo/wheel206.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I don't know if it's been mentioned here before or not, but it seems very clear and very informative!
