Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

I think the debate here over whether or not tobacco is a violation of the 5th precept is irrelevant. Maybe they should make Dhamma warnings on cigarette boxes: "The fruits of all my actions, both wholesome and unwholesome, skillful and unskillful, I will inherit" Make your choice, but don't pretend ...

Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

Again, smoking tabacco causes not to lose restrain from evil deeds I think this is up for debate. I've been addicted to cigarettes in the past and I can tell you that at the point of trying to quit, but still feeling cravings, I would likely have taken a cigarette that wasn't given to me if someone...

Re: Jordan Peterson - Developing Your Inner Psychopath

A lot of people deny their own capacity for evil, thinking themselves wholly good. I certainly used to think that of myself. This is misguided because it can allow you to act selfishly in small ways whilst believing oneself to be good. It can create a blind spot as it were. Being aware of the ways i...

Re: Is smoking tobacco/ e-ciggarettes a breach of the 5th precept?

The 5th precept is, so far as my understanding goes, about substances which cause heedlessness. Tobacco is difficult to fit definitively into the category of things which cause heedlessness because in terms of it's effects it doesn't impede your judgement as much as something like alcohol, or other ...

Tips on maintaining a consistent method

I've been meditating on and off for the best part of 10 years. My issue seems to be that I frequently tend to flit from method to method (e.g. body scan to breath to vipassana etc) rather than developing one method consistently. I'm not exactly sure why this is. I think it may be due to running out ...

Re: Responding to Critics and Anti-Buddhists

Don't talk about your practise with people whom you don't think will respect it, or gain any benefit from it. If you don't make any unwarranted reference to your beliefs you won't draw as much unwarranted criticism. Where you do encounter it, I'd say rather than try to argue out of the situation, ju...

Re: Lying precept

For example , Maybe you can't understand if someone about same position in the same company knows of your salary which is higher than s/he , they will create problem and perhaps will bring it to the manager , what do you think will the manager question why I revealed it to others ?! I don't underst...

Re: Lying precept

Buddha walks away when he saw devadatta coming towards him doesn't mean he was afraid of him. I am trying my best not to violate the precept , everyone is not perfect but since we are learning dhamma , we have to consider many things . Maybe you are very good in dhamma and training , I don't know ,...

Why does it matter for you ? Instead why not focusing on how to practise not lying precept ? You seems interested in others privacy overstepped people boundary . It doesn't matter to me. You can lie to them for all I care. I'm asking because maybe you have a good reason to be concerned about them k...

Re: Buddhism is radically diffrent from other relegions is a wishful thnking?

I'd be curious to know whether anyone can relate to my experience. Yes, I can understand where you coming from even though I never had the experience of hedonism. But I had enough life experience to understand Dukkha. I suppose more specifically I meant experience of getting Buddhism wrong, rejecti...

Re: Buddhism is radically diffrent from other relegions is a wishful thnking?

From another post: 3- Sometimes i feel that Buddhists are not so different from other human beings except the terminology they use. Maybe the wishful thinking i have that Buddhism is radically different can be a cause of disappointment. https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?p=487365#p487365 I can b...

Hi Forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I have been working my way through the Digha Nikaya and have come across something that has got me rather upset. As a gay man, I came to Buddhism for it's welcoming friendly, humanistic approach, imagine my dismay reading the cakkavatti sutta only to rea...

Re: How much entertainment should we allow?

I think a better way to view it, rather than using words with heavy connotations like 'abstain' would be to attempt to be more entertained by less stimuli.

By this I mean to develop a practise whereby sitting on a chair in your room doing nothing can make you feel contented, or entertained.
