Re: Two eight fold paths

befriend wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 2:33 am I just read majjhima nikaya 117, it seems like there is an 8 fold path with effluents siding with merit and a noble 8 fold path that is transcendent. What makes them different?
Insight is the difference.
When insight is reached the mundane path becomes the noble path.

Re: Is the nature of the mind is ignorance?

The nature of the mind is selfishness, but it ultimately lends to happiness. This is what keeps mankind from turning into a dystopian nightmare.

Re: What is this knowledge for?

Isn’t faith “the belief in something?” It’s the ability to accept the truth Before all is clear Maybe it’s not true after all I can agree to faith being the prerequisite to truth. Yes… having faith in something doesn’t mean it’s true. Which is why I argue faith doesn’t know truth. Wisdom(direct exp...

Re: What is this knowledge for?

You can only have faith in that which you do not know. Faith is a way of knowing Isn’t faith “the belief in something?” I would argue that faith is a very strong belief in something to be true, but it is not the wisdom of truth. It’s this wisdom(insight) that converts faith into truth(fact).

Re: What is this knowledge for?

The knowledge is for: Short term: to gain happiness; long term: to attain Nibbana. It is fruitful by just knowing even one topic in this Sasana. Like the case of āyasmā Tisaraṇagamaniyo Thero. Knowing the value of Tisarana (the three refuges), a man took refuge in the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha. He...

SarathW wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2024 1:01 am Further considering my question I wondered whether the knowledge is to increase Saddha.
Normally we read the contract or get a solicitor to check it before we sign it.
Perhaps a deeper investigation of Dhamma may increase your faith.
You can only have faith in that which you do not know.

Re: Eternity

I'm asking cappuccino about the distinction between eternal and immortal. You could learn from it, if you didn't keep deflecting. These aren't arbitrary beliefs - they are how the word is actually used by the people who use them. If we insist on our own definitions of words then communication is im...

Every sun-atomic particle contains mind/body/soul.
That sounds like something Deepak Chopra would say. <shudder>
I’m unfamiliar with Mr.Chopra’s teachings.
Is he good?

It would be interesting to find that passage. Who would own Nibbana? :reading:
The arahant.

Re: Eternity

People think they are the same person they were (twenty years ago)… They do not account for the fact they’re someone else (Well they sort of do) Yes, and another distinction is that a soul is created at conception, and so - although it may be considered to be immortal, because it can't cease to exi...

Re: Eternity

Well OK, and if so is it in any way different from a human soul as conceived by a faithful Catholic? Why do you keep bringing up an arbitrary belief based Catholic? I’m not interested in beliefs, I’m interested in your wisdom(insights) on this matter as it relates to dhamma. I'm asking cappuccino a...

Nirvana is a dimension, the final dimension

That is where Buddha is
This is my wisdom too.
Although I would remove the final part as it simply denotes time. Nibanna has no beginning and no end. “It” is etefnity/immortality/deathless/life…..

Re: Immortality

Can Theravadists not use the word soul? Theravādins can and do use the word "soul" ( jīva ) when critiquing certain wrong views. In particular, it crops up in connection with the two views, "The soul and the body are the same" and "The soul and the body are different"....
