Re: SN 15.3 Assu Sutta. Tears.

This is one of those teachings that my mind has held onto over the years, and I've managed to remember it. I think the most pertinent part for me is the emphasis on practice because of the truth of pain and suffering, and the necessity to overcome it. I think even without an understanding of rebirth...

Re: AN 10.176 Cunda Sutta.

I like how the Buddha so easily brings Cunda's attention back to the actions that actually change a person, the actions that have tangible effects on health, mental strength, and well-being in the community. Very fulfilling to read this sutta.

Re: Queen of Katwe

Thanks for the recommendation, I will watch it as soon as I get the chance. My family also will be interested to see it. It reminds me of the 2006 film "Akeela & The Bee" - among many others just like it.

Greetings from a past member

Hello everyone, Many blessings and well wishes to you all. I am one of those on-and-off again members who have been active and then inactive several times over the past 7+ years, and recently I've been gone so long that I figured it might be a good idea to re-introduce myself. I am Kourtney Andar. I...

Re: Dharma Talks or Videos

Really great stuff here. I will offer this video of a talk by Kusala Bhikshu. He is not a Theravadan monk but I really enjoyed his humor and simplicity and how he relates to this non-Buddhist crowd. He also jams out on blues harmonica at the end  http://youtu.be/D_CSTLTUtm8" onclick=&qu...

Re: Buddhism and smoking, what's your thoughts?

Forgot to mention that I'm currently attempting to give up all smoking and intoxicants and to eventually take refuge and the precepts again. Coming back to Dhamma Wheel is a part of the process for me.

Really enjoyed that article, by the way. Good read.

Re: Buddhism and smoking, what's your thoughts?

I haven't called myself a Buddhist in a long time because I've begun smoking both cannabis and tobacco and drinking alcohol again, after having given it up. Because of this, I haven't taken the precepts or refuge in years. I think one can rationalize something if they really just want to do it. But ...

Re: Where does one go on attaining Nibbana

There are some really good responses here. I'd like to offer this text by Thanissaro Bhikkhu, a comprehensive exploration of the concept of nibbana. Mind Like Fire Unbound http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/likefire/index.html Even just reading the abstract greatly helped me under...

Re: Falling asleep during meditation

Hi Ananda, Thank you for your wonderful advice. I never thought about using the pain associated with the lotus position as a meditation object. That's interesting. But really, that position is hell on my legs and feet. The few times I've tried it for an entire session, I could barely move them at th...

Re: Falling asleep during meditation

Bodom: Ah yes, walking meditation. I'm quite familiar with it but I don't practice nearly enough. Thank you for this reminder. I notice that if I sit first then the drowsiness occurs. I may try walking first, or maybe walking as a break from sitting. Ian: that is great yet simple advice. Establish m...

Falling asleep during meditation

Hey folks, This has been something I've struggled with ever since first beginning meditation practice years ago and haven't been able to solve. I quite often fall asleep during sessions, particularly during mindfulness of breathing when I'm counting in-and-out breaths. I also sometimes doze off even...

Hello, again

Hi everyone,
I'm Kourtney. I actually joined the forum in 2009 and have had an active account ever since. I tend to be active for a while and then disappear, but I always come back for some reason. Still haven't figured that out, lol.

Anyway, cheers. I hope you all are well.
