Re: Debt to ones parents

If one's parents were abusive and otherwise harming their own children, imagine the suffering and hell that they are going through. Were they really going through suffering and hell, though? In most cases; absolutely, no question about it. There are some exceptions. For example, I was treated quite...

Re: Debt to ones parents

I want to see someone actually work out the details of how a person from a dysfunctional background can develop such a view. In addition to what's been said; Karuna & Panna- Compassion and understanding. If one's parents were abusive and otherwise harming their own children, imagine the suffering a...

Re: Wholesome and unwholesome thinking (MN 19)

... Or maybe it is related to the teaching (in a commentary, I think) that we are all born with different preponderances of the wholesome and unwholesome roots. Maybe I do not have the strong tendency towards ill-will that I do towards greed/lust. ... I don't recall reading it from the Tripitika; b...

Re: protocol for visiting a temple for the first time

Katina will be celebrated at most SE Asian Theravada temples soon (various ones in this area of Minnesota are having them on Oct. 8, 14 & 15). This is a good time to get to know the lay people and how the temple operates & meet the monks. Find a phone# for the temple (or stop by and find someone) an...

Re: Question on fruits and vegetables offerings

I recall reading somewhere [perhaps Thanisarro's 'Buddhist Monastic Code'] that the rule disallowing bikkhu's from clearing brush and killing plants came about so as not to upset the Jains and others who thought it was unbecoming of an aesthetic to involve themselves in harming plants in such a way....

Good one, I was actually thinking something similar when I opened this thread today and laughed out load reading your response.
It's not just a joke though, there is a good metaphor there.

Re: Meaning of "crores" in Buddhavamsa

Thanks Kim. Yes, the context in which I was reading it seemed like it should be something akin to 'householders', 'anagami', 'tradesmen', etc. or the like. Now coming across it, after looking up the meaning, it does make sense in the context of a very large number. Most of the time in the Buddhavams...

Meaning of "crores" in Buddhavamsa

What is the meaning of 'crore' as used in the Buddhavamsa? In reading the Buddhavamsa I'm coming across the term "crores" quite a bit. The context is of crores becoming converted; participating in a ceremony; gathering in congregation, etc. I tried to look it up online and the definitions I came acr...

Re: Longest period of Meditation!

Have you seen the movie Samsara (2001)? That was a pretty good movie about a Tibetan Buddhist monk who goes on a 3 year retreat in a cave. After he comes out, he still struggles with lust . . . I won't be a spoiler so won't tell you the rest . . . unless you want to hear it. I've seen it. ...

By laws for non profit

I have some Thai friends who have initiated a home for a few monks to stay at and practice Dhamma in accordance with the traditional monastic lifestyle. Naturally, the monks offer advice and teachings to those who show up to support them and in the future there will be retreats and some scheduled le...

Re: Should mentally troubled people stay away from Buddhism?

The way Buddhism can be a snake for the mentally ill in my case was that like a lot of people I had the mind state of not being good enough. Someone suffering from feelings of low self worth shouldn't meditate most of the day. They should work on developing social skills and genuine self confidence...

Have you tried corpse meditation?
Then when you see the body of a female; you can see it as what will come to be a rotting corpse. You can also meditate on the 32 parts of the body and become familiar with the disgust of how the body is really constructed.

Re: vesak day question

. Tradition ascribes to the Buddha himself instruction on how to pay him homage. Just before he died, he saw his faithful attendant Ananda, weeping. The Buddha advised him not to weep, but to understand the universal law that all compounded things (including even his own body) must disintegrate. He...
