Re: Veganism: a host of issues.

Greetings ManEagle, I have just returned to this forum after a period of abstaining from such things and being married to a Buddhist and having convinced her also to go vegan I thought I'd check in to the forum to see if this subject had come up anywhere. I'm not surprised it is being discussed but...

Re: Veganism: a host of issues.

I adopted a vegan lifestyle a couple of years ago because I was unable to justify the alternative and reconcile it with my conscience. The more my compassion developed, the more difficult I found it to eat meat, so a few years ago I became vegetarian. After about half a year, I decided that every a...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Although Amnesty International's report doesn't have anything to do with what's going on at Dhammakaya it does make for interesting and somewhat depressing reading. I am guessing that most Thai citizens and foreigners alike may not be affected too much by what the Junta is doing but I for one would ...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I also received a letter from them asking me to donate $2500. It is just a request as they are building a new facility in Singapore that has a hall capable of holding 500 people for meditation at any one time. Rather than make rash judgements about this, I would very much like to see a copy of this...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

There are those, my wife included, who believes the Thai junta is out to completely destroy Buddhism in Thailand and somehow convert every Buddhist to Islam. I guess anything is possible under a dictatorship but I would have thought this unlikely. Maybe one of the Dhammakaya followers on here would...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

So it appears things have been happening again at Pathum Thani. As the only English news I can find is either from the Bangkok Post or the Nation I was wondering if it's true that Dhammajayo left the temple last Thursday and is apparently now in hiding? More importantly perhaps, if he was to face th...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I do wish they'd hurry up and get this Dhammajayo business sorted out soon. Just recently my wife has taken to chanting whenever she can. And she's got hold of some annoying YT video from Dhammakaya with chanting at twice the normal speed. Sounds like Pinkie & Perky chanting. It's driving me bloody ...

Re: Former follower recalls his “riches to rags” story after being inducted to Dhammakaya sect

And sects pry on naïve and easily-influenced people. It doesn't absolve them from responsibility not one bit. Having been married to a Thai for not far short of 10 years now and having met many other Thais in that time I am of the firm opinion that "naive and easily-influenced" (or gullible) are pr...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

(I'm refraining from the c-word here.) Ironically the "c-word" was used in the very first reply to the OP's question. Personally I wouldn't describe them that way. They may fit some definitions of a cult but as far as I'm aware, not enough of what they do and practice is that much different (or str...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I dont know why we are still on mano, I wasn't going to bother with this anymore but something inside me can't resist. My only comment here is that, correct me if I'm wrong (which actually I know I'm not because I've already checked), YOU are the one who keeps on about Mano. Aside from his name bei...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Actually, we're not so different. I too have had a keen interest in religions for many years. I have studied religions at university and became interested in Buddhism in particluar because it fitted more with my then views on how best to live my life. I practiced meditation and found it to be very ...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Anyway, back to the main point here, and that is that I believe that Dhammakaya as an organisation have a responsibility to ensure their followers are not becoming too extreme in the way they conduct themselves in everyday life. That is an interesting idea. Can you describe how they might do this.....

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

I myself am probably the opposite of you, I have had strong interest in religion since a very young age, all religions interested me actually, not just Buddhism. Actually, we're not so different. I too have had a keen interest in religions for many years. I have studied religions at university and ...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Let me ask you this, devoted religious people exist everywhere, not just Dhammakaya, if your wife suddenly left Dhammakaya and had an equal amount of devotion to another temple or faith would you express the same discontent? If she left and joined Islam and started being super strict on consuming p...

Re: Wat Dhammakaya

Incidentally I was in Thailand earlier this year and visited the big temple in Pathum Thani (or rather was conned into visiting with my wifes' family) and spent 4 hours in the blazing heat simply watching around 1200 monks walk between the rows and rows people on their way back from their travels. I...
