Re: Pali pronunciation

I am lucky I am Bulgarian in that Bulgarian pronunciation is closer to Pāḷi than English, being 'harder'. It's almost the same actually. Yes, quite similar, in Ukrainian as well. The only problem with Pāḷi pronunciation I have is where to put the stress on. I don't think there's a set rule, is ther...

Where does the form maraṇasati come from?
This must be a simplified form of maraṇassati which occurs in Anguttara Nikaya and other Pali texts.

Re: Digital Pali Reader (DPR) software program.

I was wondering if anyone else here is using the Digital Pali Reader program. It works in conjunction with the Firefox browser in offline mode. Learning to use it seems to be quite difficult (at least for me!). I thought that it might be usefull to share tips about how to do things. Nowadays it won...

I replied: Dear Bhante, Thank you very much, your reply is illuminative. The Visuddhimagga gives a careful and accurate explanation of this passage, with explanation of the grammatical forms. However, it does not resolve the unusual formation yatvādhikaraṇam , which I don't recall seeing elsewhere t...

Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ (yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ)

Dear Pāli friends, I would like to make sense of the passage on guarding sense doors: Idha bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimitataggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ cakkhundriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya p...

Re: Etymology of upekkha

Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit correspondence is "upekṣā", which is less distorted.

However it would be unnatural to draw etymology from a language that was created much later.

Yes, in later Sanskrit reconstruction this word somehow obtained the connotations of superiority, condescendence and disregard.

Re: Origin of Thanissaro Bhikkhu's Meditation Method

Borān kammaṭṭhāna exemplifies natural transformation of abstract methodology into ritual. It took the genius of Ajahn Lee to revive the parts of it that remained sound and practical, and skip the rest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N414x2i8bIQ One of the aspects of this transformation is described...

Re: Pali Term: Sakkāya

Seems like "is-a-body" version is substantiated:
Sakkāyadiṭṭhīti vijjamānaṭṭhena sati khandhapañcakasaṅkhāte kāye; sayaṃ vā satī tasmiṃ kāye diṭṭhīti ‘sakkāyadiṭṭhi’.
