Re: Developing in Dhamma in Thailand

Also, as I'm sure you're aware, Tan Ajahn Suchart speaks brillant English, and has many good books. If you haven't already, I highly suggest that you read his autobiography and/or Dhamma for the asking (VOL 2 is said to be better). http://Www.kammatthana.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return ...

Re: Developing in Dhamma in Thailand

Hi Sweet Nothing, I'm pleased to know that you'll be visiting Wat Yan or, more specifically, Tan Ajahn Suchart. Have you been in contact with Phra Yih Wey? Are you staying on Chi-on mountain where the forest monks stay? I hope you make the most of your trip to Thailand :) Hello FutureBhikkhu, I hav...

Developing in Dhamma in Thailand

Dear friends, I'm a 24 year old man from India. Presently, my practice is going strong as a layman and I've been practicing meditation in the S. U Ba Khin lineage for over 3 years. Seclusion is difficult and renunciation is off the cards. For me sensuality seems to be the main hindrance in going for...

Re: What is an orgasm ?

I don't know how you could have a discussion of orgasm with the modern audience, to describe in terms of 6 sense bases and 5 aggregates without reference to some scientific and biological descriptive experiences that they can relate to. Orgasm is very much tied to health, vitality, endorphins, plea...

That's all fine and dandy, but my initial question remains unanswered. That's alright though, as this is off topic. :focus: Please accept the following with a pinch of salt. ----------------------------- Psychology Today History of Cannabis in India By Jann Gumbiner, Ph.D. on June 16, 2011 - 9:45am...

Re: is masturbation a lower hindrance than sex?

I would think a highly developed system of trade is necessary for a product to be considered widely available. Also keep in mind that not all cannabis sativa is meant for smoking. Many varieties, called hemp, are grown for fiber, oil, etc. Really, it grows almost everywhere in India even today. It ...

Re: is masturbation a lower hindrance than sex?

Be compassionate with yourself. It is definitely less harmful than having sex with a partner. In fact, sexual memories with real partners are some of the strongest attachments/impressions to dissolve. Definitely, Masturbation is much less harmful. I don't know where this is coming from, but it seem...

Re: Suicide kamma

Suicide is often the end result of extremely intolerable dukkha. Dukkha is inherent in samsara, however; it becomes extremely intolerable when the being heavily accumulates kammas that produce dukkha and there are fewer accumulation of kammas that produce joy. In such a situation, when the being com...

Re: is masturbation a lower hindrance than sex?

I think hindrance is not the best word, since it is an action. Masturbation arises when one succumbs to the hindrance of sensuality. It is like being defeated by your enemy. If we learn something from our defeats and grow in wisdom, becone stronger and more resolved, then it is beneficial. Be compas...

Re: What is an orgasm ?

First of all, thanks to all those who participated for your encouraging contributions. As far as I know there is no specific mention about orgasm in Abhidhamma. Ajan Braham once said "Jhana is better than sex" in one of his dhamma talks. He did not give much details about the reason for his comment....

What is an orgasm ?

I am sorry to offend monastics who may read this. I am not interested in the scientific or biological description of an orgasm. The feeling is most distinguished among the usual range of sensations & feelings, in its intensity as well as its elusiveness. I want to know if there is any in depth analy...

Re: mahasi vipassana vs goenka vipassana

Thanks Tiltbillings. Hi Sweet_Nothing what do you mean by "pure teaching"? Do you mean the teaching as presented in the sutta or are you referring to the system of meditation as taught by Goenka. Hi Mr Man. By "Pure Teaching", I mean that the essence of Shakyamuni Buddha's discovery (Dhamma) has bee...

Re: mahasi vipassana vs goenka vipassana

I was at Goenkajis cremation. There were many Bhikkhus in attendance along with many lay people and assistant teachers. Before the electronic cremation, people who were allowed inside were just sitting there - some meditating. There was a salute by the Indian guard, after which the Bhikkhus recited v...

Re: Knowingly consuming trace amounts of alcohol

Given that you're a lay person, I suppose it depends on your intent and level of dedication towards the precepts. Personally, I would not intentionally consume alcohol containing foods but if I had to - on occasssion do so, then I would not mind them in negligible (less than 2-3%) quantities unless ...
