Re: Spinal alignment

Your spine has natural curves - no need to try and make it rod-straight.

Strengthening your core muscles will aid in maintaining a better posture.

"Keeping the Breath in Mind" Method 1

I recently stumbled across this book , and it intrigued me since I remember Ajaan Lee being the teacher of Ven. Thanissaro's teacher, Ajaan Fuang. So I read through the two meditation methods and had some questions: 1) In Method 1, Ajaan Lee states: Then bring [the awareness] into The Fourth Base, t...

Re: On associating with the wise

I don't read the advice to 'associate with the wise' as advice to also cut off completely from those we don't consider wise (and it always worries me a bit, making a judgement on other people like that). It's perfectly possible to be friendly with people, socialise with them, but avoid joining in t...

Re: What's stopping you?

It may just be "delusion" talking Or it might just be that you know yourself well enough, to know what is most suitable for you at this stage of your life. Not all Buddhists should ordain anyway. If all Buddhists got ordained, it would make getting dana very difficult for all those monks and nuns, ...

Re: Difficulty with metta bhavana

Have you ever tried doing it this way ? It's not a delineated brahmavihara practice event, but a way of being in the world. Yes, I try to do this as an "everyday practice" sort of thing, although I never knew of the sutta before. Thanks for sharing it. I guess I feel that I'm not as successful in b...

Re: How to live as a forest monk in North America?

I would like to leave the home life. I want to practice by myself the way the Buddha did and think about ordaining after. The issue is I am from Toronto(Thornhill to be exact), Canada...and it is freezing. Is it possible to live the life of a forest monk anywhere in North America or do I need to mo...

Re: What's stopping you?

I am engaged to be married. It may just be "delusion" talking, but I just don't feel that the way my life is going so far is leading me to ordination. Devout laity, sure, but at this point I don't see it being skillful to leave my partner and our families.

Re: Difficulty with metta bhavana

Thanks for the replies. I will try to be more patient with this, and more kind to myself by not seeing my foray into metta bhavana as some sort of failure.

Is there much of a difference between the metta bhavana techniques I mentioned in the OP?

Difficulty with metta bhavana

What is the difference between practicing metta meditation by directing it towards specific people (friends, neutral, people we don't like), versus cultivating the feeling of metta and directing it more generally (i.e. in various directions)? The metta sutta doesn't seem to even mention directing me...

Re: Starting Mahasi-style again - questions

I understand that being aware of all sensations, feelings, etc that arise is part of insight meditation. But is the awareness supposed to feel like I'm waiting for something to come up so I can blast it with my Awareness Ray? Lately that's how I feel it is - I know that all things are impermanent an...

Re: Lay sangha vs temple/monastery

The internet can be your friend... :coffee: Invincible: You experience, I'm sure, echoes that of many. One of the great benefits of DhammaWheel is the "sangha" here of monks, as well as many very experienced Theravadins. The level of Dhamma discourse can be miles ahead of that which you might find ...

Lay sangha vs temple/monastery

Which would be a better environment to delve deeper into Buddhism and meditation: a lay sangha/sitting group, or going to a temple/monastery? I've been more or less practicing on my own for the past few years, with short stints in lay Zen groups (when I was still practicing zazen). I think my practi...

Re: Starting Mahasi-style again - questions

Okay, so last night the same sensation came up after maybe 15 minutes, and then it turned into this long-lasting pressure/tingling sensation in the same area. Long-lasting as in at least 10 minutes in duration. My awareness of this sensation was quite strong, but it felt uncomfortable to focus on it...

Re: Breaking the 5th Precept Consequences?

What is the karmic consequence for breaking the 5th precept? Hypothetically, if there a was person who never did anything negative to anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the only negative kamma would be the hurting of oneself, which would be the damage to ones own mind correct? Not to m...

Re: Starting Mahasi-style again - questions

I would tend to note that sort of thing as "seeing" and/or "lightness" but I don't think it matters how you note it - the important thing is to notice it, the noting being just an aid. Did you notice whether you were more or less concentrated/mindful just after that experience? :anjali: Mike I felt...

Re: Starting Mahasi-style again - questions

So today during my sitting meditation, at around 25 minutes I began to have a sensation of lightness in my forehead/between the eyes. By lightness, I mean in both weight and that it was as though a flashlight was shining onto that area... it's like I could sense light from a lightbulb but not actual...

On associating with the wise

How is it possible - as a layperson - to be more prudent in "associating with the wise" in modern Western society, when we are expected to mix and mingle with anyone and everyone? Do many of you have "dhamma friends" - friends who are also Buddhist (or maybe of another faith tradition) that you can ...

Re: How reliable is Meditation

Do you mean: can meditation lead to recollection of past lives? Or if you have such a recollection, is it reliable? Can you perhaps rephrase the question? Good topic by the way. second. I'm thinking more of realizations gained through meditation. On another forum I frequent, where there the majorit...

Re: Starting Mahasi-style again - questions

Hi Invincible_Summer, You might find the book "In this very life" by U Pandita helpful. Ven Pesala has it on this web page: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pesala/Pandita/ In making the verbal label, there is no need for complex language. One simple word is best. For the eye, ear, and tongue doors we ...
