Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa
I'd also like to add my findings regarding this. First, here is the passage from the Visuddhimagga: 8. It is not possible for a meditator to begin to accomplish transformation by supernormal powers unless he has previously completed his development by controlling his mind in these fourteen ways. Now...

Re: Are the aggregates dukkha?
For an arahant, there is still physical pain (such as the Buddha's back pain in MN 53). There is also DN 16, which is even more descriptive of the Buddha's physical pain, just before his passing away: And during the Rains the Lord was attacked by a severe sickness, with sharp pains as if he were abo...

Re: Are the aggregates dukkha?
Correct. But an unenlightened run-of-the-mill person owns them and feels miserable because of this. Yes, he feels a mental vedanā along with the bodily vedanā. Like described in the Salla Sutta: Bhikkhus, when the uninstructed worldling is being contacted by a painful feeling, he sorrows, grieves, ...

Re: What is Sangha, what does it mean?
There are three aspects of the term saṅgha:
1. The monastic community (monks/nuns/novices)
2. The lay Buddhist community
3. Any person at any of the four stages of Enlightenment—whether lay or ordained (i.e., ariya-saṅgha)

Re: Ven. Anālayo uses circular reasoning, to assert that jhāna is not possible while walking
as further degrees are developed? There's a good chance that's precisely what happens. More developed seclusion from sensual pleasures once in jhāna—and deeper levels of concentration, until concentration is to the point of one being ever more absorbed in the meditative experience (such as the arūp...

Re: Sammā-samādhi
I do agree with you that the statement isn't exactly correct (jhāna is still samādhi), however, did you read the rest of the thread? There are other instances in the Suttas where sammā-samādhi is defined differently than the usual definition of simply being the four jhānas.
