Re: SN 7.21 Saṅgārava Sutta

Of those established in virtue
And know not the possibilities
(Of those we know a many)
The Tathagatha extends the boundary

Let virtual settles, the lake clears
To see the coming and going
Knowing that is just that
Nothing more to be done

For what value is there To compare with another Cowherd's or Nigaṇṭhas' observances Are not of another but our very own The cowherd knows the whereabouts (the mind) And awares of what he eats (the body) Fettered by greed for the morrow (rebirth) He fails to attain the ariya practice Practising ahims...

Re: AN 10.96: Kokanuda Sutta — To Kokanuda

In gratitude for the information provided in this forum, I'd like to share a little presentation that I've prepared on the Sutta. It uses some of the information provided here and some that from elsewhere. As a Powerpoint, it's inherently brief. Thus, it may not make sense for some. https://dl.dropb...

Re: SN 1.80 Pajjota Sutta: Source of Light

Sam Vera wrote: This is a really interesting one. At first, I thought that it was marred by an obvious anti-climax: it starts with two qualities recommended by the Buddha (the indriya of mindfulness and wisdom) and then descends to commonplace features of material existence. Cattle, ploughing, and ...

Re: Kamma, Vipaka and Rebirth

Hi Robert I'm afraid that I do not follow your comment: The bhavanga is a bit of a red herring for explaing how accumulations are carried on. What about all the vitthi cittas that arise in between bhanga cittas? In fact accumulations are carried forward citta by citta, whether it be bhavanga or cakk...

Re: Alternative translation for arising & passing away

As this is the Pali stream, can I request that questioners and commentators make a habit of quoting the respective Pali text so that we can learn the original language rather than simply the translations.

I do appreciate all of your contributions.

Re: SN 1.76 Najīrati: Does Not Decay

My sincere apologies for negligence when I posted my initial enquiry on name and clan as I should have included the whole sentence which is The physical form of mortals decays, Their name and clan does not decay. Doing so, would have highlighted the reason for the Buddha saying that name and clan do...

Their name and clan does not decay.
I'm more interested in the meaning of "name and clan". Anyone?

When we hear (or read)
What and only what we want to hear (or read)
Ditthi cannot be but personal (not Samma)
Possessed of the 3 characteristics

The Blessed One has shown
The way to avoid entanglement
To arouse virtue and discernment
Is to be truly open to awareness

Re: AN 4.35: Vassakara Sutta

In the Maha-parinibbana Sutta, this same Vassakara was sent by Ajatasattu to inquire from the Buddha whether the Vajjis could be conquered. The Buddha responded obliquely by asking Ananda about the seven qualities of the Vajjis and as long as they held true to those qualities, the Vajjis presented t...

Re: AN 3.64 Sarabha

Another wonderful selection. Thanks To me, the Sutta teaches us the approach to take when selecting our teachers. The first "roar" asks us to assess the claims of attainment (of the teacher), the second the behaviour, and the third, the usefulness of the teaching. To make the Sutta really ...
