Re: Building of viharas and life of insects

When agriculture is in the future replaced by hydroponics, this will not be an issue. :D

Re: Building of viharas and life of insects

Interesting, thanks, so most actions still have negative karmic effects for Jains, unless it is purely ascetic and couldn't have been avoided even with being careful, so definitely more extreme than buddhism. Yes, it's very constricting. In regard to #2 quoted here, a Jain monk who lives in a hut t...

Re: Building of viharas and life of insects

I had thought the Jains considered any himsa to be wrong, even if unintentional. When some of the authors call nonoccupational himsa intentional himsa it's misleading, or at least the translation is, because it implies that the occupational himsa is unintentional, as if by mistake or ignorance. Asi...

Re: Building of viharas and life of insects

Bottom line; although the Jain ideal is very good, in theory, impossible in practice with modern agriculture and buildings. The best we can do, in my opinion, is to lessen the violence and collateral damage as much as possible. Jains have a developed sravakacara literature, which contains rules for...

Re: Suttas about castes

I found Vasettha Sutta which talks about the topic of occupations and birth and differentiations: "600. The Blessed One said: Vasettha, I will tell you step by step how it happens, The classification of living things in this and other births. 601. Look at the grass and trees, although they are not a...

Re: Suttas about castes

To paraphrase Rousseau - i admit that low or high status birth comes from past kamma, but also so does sickness, does that mean that we are forbidden to have doctors? :anjali:

Suttas about castes

Again me with a question about what the Suttas say :D Now, i know that the Buddha does talk about how one is not a brahman by birth but by moral behavior etc, and also how anyone from any caste is pure or impure not on the basis of their caste but their morality, but does any Sutta talks against the...

Re: Citta-sankhara and mano-vinnana

Hm, so that other topic quotes SN 22. 79 And why, bhikkhus, do you call them 'Saṅkhāras'? 'They fabricate fabricated things', bhikkhus, that is why they are called 'Saṅkhāras'. And which fabricated things do they fabricate? They fabricate Rūpa as a fabricated thing for the state of having form,{3} t...

Citta-sankhara and mano-vinnana

What is the difference between citta-sankhara and mano-vinnana? Do the Suttas (and if not the Suttas then the Commentaries) define sankhara-khanda? Does it have a different definition from the MN 44? It seems it would have to, because MN 44 includes perception and feeling as citta-sankharas, whereas...

Re: /study-psychiatric-diagnoses-are-scientifically-meaningless

A catchy headline to create controversy claiming some anti-scientific nonsense. Yawn. "Although diagnostic labels create the illusion of an explanation they are scientifically meaningless and can create stigma and prejudice. I hope these findings will encourage mental health professionals to think b...

Re: Mahayana /Vajrayana attitude with Pali Canon?

You're simply wrong. You're the one who is deliberately denying Buddha's teachings Dan just mentioned in the last message here, and which i've mentioned several times. "Oh, sure, she talks ill behind my back, I know that for a fact, I saw her videos on YT, but she never said anything mean to my face...

What is your deal? Can you stop answering to my posts? You have nothing of value to say, or at least nothing of interest to me. I'm asking you to stop. Put me on the block list and ignore my posts, whatever.

Re: Mahayana /Vajrayana attitude with Pali Canon?

I just think it's strange to turn to the Buddha for advice on how to live a happy lay life with no higher aspiration, given that the Buddha did not exactly speak of lay people positively. Sounds like wanting to marry a person who flat out told you they don't love you. Again, the point is that needn...

Re: Your top five religions (with a short reason)?

I think more about if i like specific teachings, not whole traditions. Not it specific order: 1. Buddha's clear teaching of ten akusala kamma is great, love the categorical rejection of killing and that it has always been taught to apply to animsals; also love that the sexual part is actually very p...
