Re: Query about the Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
Some students read the last stanza of the Karaniya sutta as something that was added later. I do not know the basis for this view; however, since coming across it, I tend to leave it off.

Re: Book about jhana
Both of these are excellent guides to what are sometimes called the "sutta jhanas". As a previous poster pointed out Ayya and Leigh are of the same lineage, (Ayya taught Leigh). I would read both if you are interested in the sutta jhanas. I'd also suggest going on a retreat with Leigh. Whi...

Renunciation of the Sense Pleasures and more?
I've been studying nekhamma parami and the subject of renunciation. It seems that in the suttas renunciation is taught as letting go of the pleasure of the senses. In the Tapussa sutta (AN 9.41) the Buddha speaks in terms of seeing the drawback of sensual pleasures, understanding the reward of renun...

Re: New Jhana Book
Will this book be available in electronic format? I'm on Leigh's mailing list for the book and received the following this morning that addresses your ebook question: Dear Friends, Right Concentration is now available directly from Shambhala: http://www.shambhala.com/right-concentration.html It wil...

Re: New Jhana Book
I don't know how you got the book, since every website—including Leigh Brasington's and Shambhala Publications—says it is available on the 13th of October. Hi Samseva, If you go directly to Shambhala's page for the book: http://www.shambhala.com/right-concentration.html you will find that you are a...

Re: New Jhana Book
The book is actually available now directly through Shambhala. I received it last week. It's excellent. Practical and clear. If you have sat with Leigh, this is an excellent synopsis of what he teaches in his retreats.

Re: Tension in my head while I focus on my breath
Hi bote, I had a very similar sensation arise at a long retreat I did this summer. It was accompanied by some progress in concentration. At first it was quite noticeable, even keeping me up at night on the retreat. I spoke to the teacher and he said (as did Kmath) that it was probably "stuck ch...

Re: Why will meditation not bring more loss and death?
Thank you for asking this question, I've wondered about this, too. I wonder if the difference is use. We visit the five daily recollections not to wish them for ourselves or anyone, but rather to acknowledge the limitations of our physical form, of samsara. Recognizing them as truth is not the same ...

Re: Leigh Brasington and retreats
Jhana 4, your friend is correct. At the retreat I sat this summer, Leigh mentioned the book several times. It is scheduled to come out at the end of 2014 from Wisdom. Leigh described it as a "Brain Dump" of everything that he knows about the Jhanas. He did caution that in his opinion it is...

Re: Leigh Brasington and retreats
I heartily recommend Leigh Brasington. He is a gifted teacher, very clear and sure. He is also just an extremely decent, kind person. I sat a two week retreat with him and I'm trying to figure out the next time that I will be able to sit with him. I tend to be someone who likes poetry and mystery in...
