Re: The truth about egg yolks?

I personally have to watch my egg intake because of a fatty liver. All food intake requires prior research and experimentation to find out how YOUR body reacts. If you have 500 cholesterol, put the eggs and burgers down. Same deal if an egg makes you feel bad in some way. While researching my diet r...

Re: There's blood in your milk. The ethics of consumption

...for this discussion, I'll stick to animals killed for both food and population control. Thoughts? I would appreciate it if you stay on topic which is about the ethics of consumption - not population control. My apologies, I wasn't clear enough. These animals are going to be killed regardless of ...

David N. Snyder wrote:what threat do deer pose?
We have deer attacking people about every year. Granted, I don't know what these people are doing to provoke them. One that was in the news several years ago happened on a trail. That I didn't expect.

Re: There's blood in your milk. The ethics of consumption

What about killing to control a population? The local hunters frequently remind us that if deer are left unchecked, they will become a danger. Obviously, this could apply to non-food animals/insects (Flies come to mind since there are so many this year), but for this discussion, I'll stick to animal...

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

Hi Mirco, A little over 2 hours from where I live is the state capitol. For me, that's actually a big trek, and I wanted to learn more before contacting anyone for a real-life meet. If anyone here knows anything about the groups in Little Rock, AR, feel free to pm me. And thank you for the encourage...

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

Hey Mike, I think that is the typical view, but many people struggle with it still. There's no denying a change to the senses which can make judgement go awry. However, I am beginning to believe that meditation counteracts those effects. When I meditate, I can't tell a difference between very little...

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

Because marijuana was mentioned in a casual use context in another thread, this seemed like a good time to share my, albeit modern, view. I was recently awarded disability for nerve damage and IBS among other things. The pain has gotten so bad that nothing short of a Demerol shot in the emergency ro...

Re: Understanding Self

Thanks, Derek. This must be the hardest part for a lot of people. I find myself phasing in and out of understanding while reflecting. It's like consciousness is a ping pong ball, and my senses are the paddles.

Re: Understanding Self

For some reason, I didn't recall aggregates from my readings and decided to look it up. Now I get it. I was struggling with the idea of what's left when the human part dies. "I" wanted to label it when the whole idea wasn't necessary for my growth. Thanks for the help!

Understanding Self

I am trying to bring a lot of concepts down to my level of understanding. One of the difficult ones has been the self. Currently, I'm leaning toward this analogy: The human body is nothing more than a space suit or deep sea diving suit we must inhabit for a short time to gain experiences in a new pl...

Re: Does an arahant not feel angry at all?

Perhaps "disgust" isn't being treated as an emotion but a reaction instead. Say you walked in on a friend getting dressed. Though you aren't disgusted by their appearance, you may be reacting to thoughts. "I hope she/he doesn't think I wanted to betray her/his trust." "I hop...

Hello Everyone

This is my first time delving into Theravada specifically. Most of what I have read discussed general beliefs and the story of Shakyamuni Buddha. I finally got the chance to research several traditions and find myself liking Theravada. I live in Arkansas and am disabled, so finding in-person instruc...
