Re: Buddhadhamma and Ethics

I'll be brave and go first then... :soap: From my understanding, all killing is unwholesome. There will always be negative kamma from killing. If this is so, it then follows the question: Is all killing equally unwholesome, is the resultant kamma the same for all acts of killing? To that, I'd say no...

Re: Mercy killing and kamma

In the Dhammapada there's a story of the Buddha visiting a hunter and his family. Regarding the wife of the hunter, a monk asked the Buddha if she, like her husband, was guilty of taking life, since she facilitated the act. The Buddha said (more or less) that Sotapanna, (which the wife was as she ha...

Re: Mercy killing and kamma

I agree with chownah and Coyote, I think what you're experiencing currently is the kamma from the act. You didn't act out of hatred or aversion, but was your mercy killing out of selfishness? Not wanting to see and allow the bird to suffer? Not liking the way it made you feel? You acted, but now may...

Re: Focusing on the nostrils?

GusVanSpent, I understand your frustration, you are using the same focus, reading the same books, and making the same effort, but not receiving the same results. All I can think of is that you aren't the same as before, you're a different person, your renewed practice should be one for the person yo...

Re: Distorting the Dharma [Advice]

Thank you all for your replies. :)

I think I will appeal to the Vice Chancellor, and if that fails, then I'll create a petition.

Anyone have anything they think I should include in this final appeal?

Re: Distorting the Dharma [Advice]

Modus.Ponens, Lol thank you, that was pretty much my initial response as well. Justsit, It was really hard for me not to do that, especially because the author insists that Buddhism 'has to adapt for modern western audiences'. Coyote, the book is written by the university, I'm in stage two of the fo...

Distorting the Dharma [Advice]

Hello, I've found myself in an odd position and could use some advice. The textbook of a course I'm taking has a chapter that discusses Buddhism. It is pretty inaccurate. I wrote to the university about it. I addressed several of the inaccuracies, but this is my main complaint: They completely chang...
