Re: slightly swollen knee after long meditation sessions

Yes, see an orthopedist. Vajrasana can be very stressful on the knees, using it for very long sessions can be harmful. You might want to consider using a meditation bench, which opens the angles of the knees slightly. Be sure the bench slants slightly downward in the front to keep the pelvis tilted,...

Re: Introduction and musings about Christianity and Buddhism

If you haven't already read them, you might find the writings of Thomas Merton https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Merton of interest. Some others - Fr. Robert Kennedy, SJ, a Jesuit priest and Zen Roshi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kennedy_(Jesuit) , Anthony DeMello https://en.wikipedia.org...

Re: How to recover after heartbreak

Expensive but important lesson! Many of us have been there. On the bright side, it was 45 days, not months or years. You're old enough to have known better, and still young enough to try again if you want. Chalk it up to gullibility and move on. Fall down seven times, get up eight. Back to practice.

Re: Secrets of the Yogis of Tibet

Is it possible what he is doing is just an acrobat? Is it possible?? Sure, how you interpret his actions depends on your view. Some will say yes, it's just acrobatics; others will say it's authentic practice on the path. Like any other dhamma/dharma teachings, one must test it like a goldsmith. In ...

Re: Secrets of the Yogis of Tibet

This is a Dzogchen practice called trul khor. It works with the winds and channels in the body. It is a very advanced esoteric practice, passed down from one's teacher after years (usually) of study. Also, it is rarely discussed on a public forum. Here is a very basic description. https://en.wikiped...

Re: What do Tibetan Teachers mean by "degenerate times"?

You would probably do better to ask your question on the sister site, Dharma Wheel Mahayana https://dharmawheel.net/, where there are many posters who are students of various Tibetan lamas and thus more qualified to provide an accurate answer.

Re: Aspirin a day keep the stroke away?

In the past 20 years or so, there were recommendations for adults to take one baby aspirin (81mg) tablet daily, as studies showed it would decrease clotting in the blood that could lead to a myocardial infarction ("heart attack"). Just recently, that recommendation has been changed as the result of ...

Re: A Buddhist monk (Dalai lama) hugging an American nun.

I can't see anything wrong with HHDL and Ven Thubten Chodron greeting each other in public with a hug . There's a video somewhere of HHDL hugging a male reporter in public, should that be criticised and classed as lustful as well? If we were all able to give each other a warm non-sexual hug now and...

Re: Too many triggers - how do you deal with them?

One way to learn to deal with them in a very practical manner begins on the meditation cushion. Here's a link to the teaching on how and why it can work. There are some Tibetan words used but they are explained in the article. https://www.lionsroar.com/how-we-get-hooked-shenpa-and-how-we-get-unhooke...

FWBO is mentioned along with founder Sangharakshita (died 2018) on ViewonBuddhism's website list of controversial "Buddhist" teachers and groups. Apparently there were allegations of sexual misconduct. http://viewonbuddhism.org/controversy-controversial-teacher-group-center-questionable.html Also so...

Interesting study. The investigators report they had trouble getting enough subjects, the sample size was only 8 males. I'd be curious to see if the results would be consistent using a larger, more diverse sample.

Could I ask why one asks question on Christian monks or any different religion on a Buddhist forum? This is the connecting to other paths forum. It is good to know about other religions as we live with 6.5 billion people with other faiths. This is an attempt to know the similarities and the differe...
