Re: Doing retreats in other traditions!

Has anyone ever gone on a retreat at a Tibetan , Zen or any other Mahayana center? I was curious and looked for a few online. They area all charging from 500 to 1500 for a retreat. I can't afford that right now. Can some one please tell me how they meditate at these places? Retreats can vary widely...

You might find Contemplative Christianity https://www.contemplativeoutreach.org/christian-contemplative-tradition or mystical Christianity of interest. The Catholic Church in particular has a long tradition of mysticism; "The Cloud of Unknowing," the writings of Sts. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avi...

Re: Question about sitting posture

Are you seated on the floor using a cushion? If so, make sure your hips are elevated slightly higher than your knees by using a small pillow or cushion, or a folded blanket under your butt. My sangha typically sits together for 50 minute sessions, followed by 10 minutes walking meditation, then back...

Re: Subduing sexual feelings

At no point did I say or imply that there is a cure for pedophilia, nor for feelings. I, and likely no one else here, can give you a magic bullet to make your feelings go away, that's not how it works. Therefore I have nothing to offer you, so l bow out. In any case, best wishes for a suitable resol...

Re: Subduing sexual feelings

The entire Western psychological science seems to think that all sexuality, including pedophilia, is hardwired into the brain and cannot be changed, so therapy is out of the question. That's not exactly correct. In case you might still be interested in a secular approach, Western psychology differe...

Re: How to confront a love triangle - or should I?

Everyone in the world is "subject to happiness and suffering, and the law of kamma; actions still have consequences." So where does your responsibility lie? By your reasoning, you should then approach everyone you know and point out to them the possible consequences of their actions. Why is that you...

Re: How to confront a love triangle - or should I?

Really, it's not your job to tell others how to live their lives. And trying to interject Buddhist teachings often only results in hostility or outright rejection. If they come to you for advice or with questions, fine, but if not, better to refrain. "I just want to get them to take a look at what t...

Re: Muscular Christianity

I think there should be a Muscular Buddhist movement to counter all of the hippy, new age, gender-bender crap that has crept into burgeoning Western Buddhism. Out of curiousity how many transvestites attend the temple you frequent? I can't say I've seen a single one at any of the Theravāda or Mahāy...

Re: Body scan and paralysis

So from that point of view, a spinal injury with subsequent paralysis need not cause loss of feeling to the affected limbs. Even without a particular body scanning technique, feeling may be present. In fact, sometimes the affected areas are hypersensitve to touch.

Re: Body scan and paralysis

Are you referring to muscle paralysis or to some time of numbness? There are persons with paralysis who still have feeling/pain in the affected area despite not being able to move it.

Re: Buddhism under persecution

Is Buddhism illegal in Tibet? I am not sure. "Buddhism" as defined by the Chinese government is not illegal in Tibet. Buddhism as traditionally practiced in Tibet is frowned upon; images of and references to the Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, etc. are strictly forbidden and breaches of that policy can r...

Re: The right to cause offense

Every right comes with a responsibility to use it wisely. In the Buddhist context of this discussion, the "right to cause offense" (assuming this discussion only refers to verbal offense, not other types) comes with the responsibility to speak within the guidelines laid down by the Buddha for Right ...

Re: High Blood Pressure

At the bottom of your heart is your “atrium”. It is the natural pace-maker of the heart. In the interest of accuracy regarding human physiology, the human heart has two atria, right and left, at the top of the heart, and two ventricles at the bottom. The atria and ventricles are the chambers that h...
