Re: Fantastic free ebooks
I'm not sure how the format for ebooks works, but what-buddha-taught.net has a huge wealth of free buddhist publications in the form of PDFs, and occasionally in straight HTML

Re: Where is this found?
I don't know if you could find that quote verbatim, but it's a reoccuring motif. I could find at least one sutta where the first part is present, and at least one sutta where the second part is present, but both of them together? Not too sure. The closest I can think of is the Buddha's last words in...

Re: Cannabis
Smoking cannabis is definitely a precept violation. Allow me to ask you this: how would you argue that drinking alcoholic drinks is a violation of a precept if I were to use the same defense? Sure, it specifically mentions alcoholic beverages in the Pali and not specifically cannabis. But what's the...

Re: Are monks allowed to touch their mothers?
I seem to recall an anecdote of Bhikku Pesala's, of him shaking the Queen's hand in some ceremony of one another (apologies if my memory is incorrect.) In the telling of the anecdote he explained that cultural context outweighs arbitrary rules in some circumstances.

Re: Walking meditation, inside vs. outside
So it should not be underestimated nor should a nice walk outside be declared as walking meditation, even if done mindfully. Greetings venerable, could you extrapolate a bit on this? How would you classify walking meditation, and how would you classify doing 'menial' walking even if done mindfully?...

The Sallatha Sutta is relevant to the topic. Quite an interesting read

Re: Walking meditation, inside vs. outside
I do my walking meditation outside, as I walk to and from university each day (40 minutes each way.) If I'm inside I may as well do sitting meditation, and I might as well use that transit time to get my meditate on!

I am shocked. He was much too young and his death is most untimely. Such is life, I suppose. Samsara sucks.

Wow, if it turns out these accusations have substance, that'll remove any doubt about Dhammakaya. Thanks for bringing this to our attention Bhante

Re: What Inspires You ?
Awesome thread, thanks for sharing your sources of inspiration. I especially like that story of Fede's! For me, I would say my inspiration lies in a couple of things. First that comes to mind are the suttas. To read the revolutionary wisdom of the Buddha really is quite humbling and profound, I find...

Re: buddha's teaching on posture?
Hi end In the mahasatipatthana sutta the Buddha specifies: "There is the case where a monk — having gone to the wilderness, to the shade of a tree, or to an empty building — sits down folding his legs crosswise, holding his body erect and setting mindfulness to the fore [lit: the front of the chest]...

Re: Working at a Glock factory?
Perhaps we should bring the issue away from the suttas and back to you. While we could discuss the semantics of Pali and try to interpret what the Buddha meant (whch of course is very interesting; thanks David, I didn't know that the Pali wording was that specific / had those implications), how does...
