Re: Should people be exhorted/persuaded to practice the Dhamma at all?

"Those for whom you have sympathy, those with whom you communicate, your friends, intimates, kinsmen and relations - all should be told about, grounded in, established in the Four Limbs of Stream-Winning. What are these four? Faith in the Buddha, faith in the Dhamma, faith in the Sangha, and virtue ...

Re: A bird chanting Buddha name ?

Parrots are well known for the ability but many other passerine birds have the ability to mimic the sounds they hear. Mynahs are another common example. Some mimic the sound of predatory birds to scare away competition.

Re: AN 10.177 Jāṇussoṇī Sutta. To Janussonin.(Revisited)

"Then Janussonin the brahman went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, exchanged courteous greetings with him. After an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, he sat to one side. Re: benefits of cow urine

https://ccim.med.ucla.edu/?page_id=149 I have no doubt that some of the traditional prescriptions work. As an Asian, I used them when young. But the problem with much of alternative medicine sold commercially is the lack of control over its ingredients. Few people who take these things know what th...

Re: benefits of cow urine

I have an Indian doctor friend and he consistently highlights the quack medicine and alternative therapies such as homeopathy and ayurveda promoted by indian media, "scientific" establishments and even politicians. The old maxim - just because it is on the Internet....

Re: Why Believe Commentaries? [From Transfer/Sharing merit limits]

Why not? Some texts are ambiguous and the Commentaries gives you a perspective of the early Buddhists. For eg what would one do with this verse without Buddhaghosa explaining what they mean. Dhammapada Verse 295: Having killed mother, father, the two brahmin kings and having destroyed the hindrances...

Re: Monastic Alms Round in the West

On a related matter, I think many monks on alms round in the west will receive fruits like whole apples and oranges. How do they deal with this, in view of the Vinaya injunction against consuming live fruits with seeds? Are monks allowed to peel or cut these fruits up themselves?

When someone tells you not to disclose who gave you this information, it is another way of saying I can't defend what I tell you so don't tell anyone it was me who told you.
