Re: Buddhism in Cambodia, Laos and Bangladesh

We also hear little about Buddhism in Cambodia and Laos as English is not widely spoken here and tourism is small. For close to 10 years, I managed a project called Dhamma Aid Asia to print Dhamma books in the local languages for free distribution in these countries and also in Vietnam, Nepal and In...

Re: Na Uyana or Mahamevnawa?

I am planning to ordain in Sri Lanka at the end of this year. I am seeking a monastery where there is an opportunity to focus on meditation, long term stability, and an English speaking teacher. I have narrowed my search to Na Uyana or Mahamevnawa. If anyone has direct experience with either or bot...

Re: No objections to Livelihood by Archery?

i wonder why others are defining wrong livelihood as something other than those five professions the buddha lists Point taken...but it does seem odd that the Buddha would cite archery as a means of Livelihood in this verse. Why would he advise how one becomes skillful in a livelihood that potential...

Re: No objections to Livelihood by Archery?

But I think the Buddha would not cite examples of Livelihood he disapproves of even when talking about persistent effort. Perhaps archery here could be in reference to the king's guards or soldiers. Your career won't go far if you're a lousy shot.

No objections to Livelihood by Archery?

"Herein, Vyagghapajja, by whatsoever activity a householder earns his living, whether by farming, by trading, by rearing cattle, by archery, by service under the king, or by any other kind of craft — at that he becomes skillful and is not lazy. He is endowed with the power of discernment as to the p...

Re: Ordination in the Mahamevnawa in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka it is an honorific for all monks. In fact, it is legally a part of all monks names on their passports. Because according to the Sri Lankan custom a bhikkhu can use the title "thero" only after the fulfilment of 10th rain (vassa). For Ven. K. Gnanananda, that was 2015.  W...

Re: Schools of Buddhism mind map

I don't see why meditation centres and practices are drawn as separate branches. Mahasi, Kanduboda, Tapovana, Thai Forest practices are modes of practice found in all Nikayas.

Re: Hauling Truckloads of Beer (Right Livelihood)

I'm about to work for a trucking company that occasionally hauls lots of beer. It seems no other place wants me and they are great people to work for from what I hear with decent pay. Is this going to create hell karma? :tantrum: Lol Thanks for answering. Is it possible for you to refuse the assign...

Re: Buddhists bowing to golden statues...

The aversion to idols and statues is a hang-up left-over from Abrahamaic religions. What's wrong with statues ? No statue has ever hurt anyone in history (unlike imaginary gods). A Buddhist bowing to a statue is no different from someone carrying around a photo of one's loved ones in the wallet.

Re: can you be atheist and theravada buddhist?

I think most lay-people including myself, think we believe in Rebirth, but really just entertain the possibility or still have a lot of doubts about it. We spend years educating ourselves because of the certainty we need to earn a livelihood in the future. Similarly, if I am fairly certain about Reb...

Re: How do the western monks handle the Visa policies in Asia?

Your query may need to be more specific. Many countries like Myanmar and Thailand have special visas for those going for retreats at meditation centres or those intending to ordain.

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

Modern society produces millions of laws. One can break the law without breaking a precept and one can also break precepts without breaking the law. In ancient India, I'm sure people copied each other's pottery designs too. Copyright laws are a modern innovation which caters to a society which cente...

Re: Islam - "There is no compulsion in religion", Yea, Right

Re the video above.

The Islam of the Champas are seen as degenerate by the rest of the Islamic world. Saudi and other Muslim nations are funding mosques, scholarships and organisations in Cambodia in order to bring them into the mainstream fold.

Re: Islam - "There is no compulsion in religion", Yea, Right

If she tries to renounce her religion in the Syariah court, it will almost certainly fail. More likely she will be sentenced to a "re-education camp" . This impacts her whole life. Not being allowed to attend Dhamma talks or going to a temple is the least of her problems. It would be difficult for h...
