masks at work

Hello everyone, this post is about the mask mandates... I work in a hospital doing admissions at an Emergency Room. I'm the person at the window who signs you in. For 2 years i had to wear a mask at work. If it were not for the fact that i worked evenings and could often pull down my mask to breath ...

Re: Darwinism and the Dhamma

Biological evolution is a fact. It's a fact in the same way the law of gravity is a fact. Evolution is not a theory as some believe, it is the law of evolution. It is compatible with the Dhamma. It is not the same as the Dhamma. The Dhamma deals with the spiritual realm. Biology is what it is. Evol...

Re: How Long do you think you will live?

I'm too scared to choose, as if that would some how seal my fate... but it would be 70 or 80; i think 80 is realistic based on general health and genetics, but feel like due to some personal habits (don't try guessing they're lamer than you would think, on the level of nail-biting or tooth grinding ...

Re: Why did you stop using drugs and what have become better in your life?

My (current) view on drugs is that they can be used essentially if they are coincidental with your situation and are good for your health. I don’t think there’s very much that falls into this category but I try not to be close minded. I do not smoke. Taken too literally this view might seem too cond...

Unrequited love

Qualifies as metta?

More like contemplation of dukkha - this longing I feel is it a wholesome thing to dwell on? But I feel as long as I am not permanently fixated on this “wish” it is kind of a starting point for metta. Thoughts?

retreat

I am thinking of doing a retreat. probably it will be a Vipassana retreat. if I go I will basically have to conform to all the retreats guidelines. although there may be room in my mind for personal discretion, basically that kind of self reflection will be forfeited. nevertheless it seems like its ...

perfection vs practicality

is the perfection of virtue compatible with the incredible "practical" side of life, i.e. a "got-to-do-it-why-not-i'll probably enjoy it anyway" attitude? That covers things like walking the dog and cooking? a "virtuous enough" attitude seems kind of un-buddhist, or is ...

Re: Sorry for being disruptive

i would not be too hard on yourself. it is hard to reach the point where you know with certainty that something was definitely wrong to say. if saying something has the chance of being beneficial it is, in my opinion, okay to say it. it is also an exercise in letting go to just let your words stay o...

crabs for dinner.......

i opened the refrigerator, saw a box of food, pulled it out, and opened it, and ... live crabs!. i have no idea what to do... my options are: - just forget about it. - look forward to eating crabs - put them in the river across the street. obviously the crabs are not "mine," but i feel kin...
