Monks sharing spiritual achievements with lay people

Hi all

The Vinaya doesn't allow Monks to share their spiritual achievements with lay people.

Why is that?

Wouldn't this help inspire the lay folk to practice harder?

Interested to hear others thoughts.

Re: The Devas

SN9.14 Note the last two stanzas  Now at that time, after the meal, on their return from alms-round, that mendicant plunged into a lotus pond and sniffed a pink lotus. The deity haunting that forest had compassion for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached tha...

That might be a confusion of Theravada devas with the devas of tantric buddhism ... ?
Yes, you might be right. I’ve studied a bit of both over the years

Help with what?
Purifying the mind. Manifesting in ways to help us.
That sort of thing.

The Devas

Hi all

I know that Mara can hinder us but can the Devas help us if we ask? Is there any mention of this in the Pali Canon?

Hi Jules. An American guy I follow on YouTube ordained a while ago in Thailand. I know the sangha he ordained with offer short term ordination for foreign men. Here's their website: https://ordinationthai.org/ And his YouTube channel - he seems like a cool guy from my interactions with him: https://...

Re: Permission of parents in Sri Lanka ordination

Your other option is to let him know only about 20% of monks last 5 years in robes and only 5% ordain for life.

So you’ll probably be back soon anyway

Re: The fetters to Stream Entry

Ajahn Martin Piyadhammo disputes the fact that silabhatta-paramasa means "clinging to rites and rituals".

His interpretation is that it means keeping the five precepts (sila).

Re: Wrong vs disagree

My initial premise is that if someone is going tell other people they are wrong about their interpretation of dhamma, that person should better be someone who have known the truth by experience (ehipassiko), otherwise how do one know what is true or false. Because it is written in the text? If the ...

Re: Permission of parents in Sri Lanka ordination

Thanks. I also wanted to clarify something: The advice from the monk I posted earlier in the discussion was directed to me and not to you. I am a 47 year old man with parents in their 80's. So the advice he might give to a 20 year old with (I assume) much younger parents than mine may be different.
