Re: Hawking: Artificial Intelligence Could End Human Race

Hawking also warned of an alien invasion... I think there's a lot of fear and stupidity surrounding AI. Those fears sometimes grab more headlines and sell more ad space than rational discourse. Personally, I'm of the mind that as with most other technology we have developed AI will have to potential...

Re: Ohio area get-together?

I'm near cincy and would be down for a meetup. As long as it falls on a day that I can make it I'll be there.

General rule of thumb for meetups is only about half of the people who say they are going to come actually show up. At least that has been my experience with other internet meetup groups.

Re: What am I going to do with my life?

Life isn't easy. Most jobs aren't enjoyable. Often times jobs that are ethical are not high paying either. You're young and have no skills, this is limiting your options. Most of the younger people in your position I'd recommend getting into a trade and developing some skills. If you feel that colle...

Who says you have to read a lot of suttas? I'm not a scholarly guy, but I just try to do the best I can... I don't read a lot of suttas these days. IMHO, if you're having trouble with something, maybe set it aside for the time being and focus on your practice. If you get to a point in your practice ...

Don't worry, they won't let it be shut down for long. Else, people might start to realize how useless the majority of government is.

Re: Dawn of the Megacities

Welcome back Poto! Interesting the first real arcology? Something which has been a regular trope of science fiction finally coming to the real world. Thanks, but I never really left, was just quiet for a while. And yeah, it's pretty cool to see this type of thing coming to life. The company that is...

Dawn of the Megacities

http://i.imgur.com/MH3r9oY.jpg They've finally broken ground on what will be the next world's tallest building. I've been waiting for this for some time. What's different about this skyscraper is the way it's built. They are using a modular factory-produced construction system to build Sky City. Wh...

Re: Insight timer for iphone, ipad and android: review plse

Hi, poto, I have had similar problems with new software on computer and discovered after a while that there was a volume setting in the software settings quite separate from the volume setting on the OS, such that you need both of them to be set fairly high to get any volume out of it. I haven't us...

Re: Insight timer for iphone, ipad and android: review plse

I recently got myself a new smartphone. Remembered this thread and thought I would download the Insight Timer app for android. Turns out the singing bowl tone thing is too quiet for my phone. I had turned the volume up to max too. Maybe my phone's speakers just suck or there is too much ambient nois...

Re: Where are all the hairy monks?

Not all of us westerners are hairy man-beasts.

I'm a westerner in my 30's and I do not have a hairy chest or back.

I do have a small amount of Native American in me, but am mostly of German decent, with some Irish and other stuff in there.

you don't need a fire to stay warm or cook. being a young city-dweller I don't know too much about camping. How can one stay warm or cook without a fire? The article stated that he stole propane tanks and cooked with it. Also, there are sleeping bags rated to -30F. I have slept in such bags at near...

Re: global warming

My food prices are through the roof right now because our farms are drying up. This is affecting my life in concrete ways right now. It is not an abstraction. Calm down there city slicker. It was a bit too dry for corn last year, but certainly wasn't the worst drought I've seen either. Beans did al...

Re: Monkhood is ripe for reform

I rather prefer the decentralized nature of the monkhood. The problem with centralizing power in any system is that those who desire power and rise to the top are often the least deserving of it. Any kind of system meant to have power and control over others is bound to attract the corrupt. While th...

Except that a basic assumption of Moore's law is that you are working diligently to develop the technology, not sitting around hoping for a miracle. So in order to set Moore's law into motion, we would have to take climate scientists mitigation efforts seriously starting right now. While I haven't ...

The safest bet is to wait. The longer we wait the cheaper and more effective climate control and mitigation technology becomes. Such is the pace of technological progress. http://nextbigfuture.com/2013/03/moores-and-wrights-law-are-best.html In comparison, the AGW proponent's efforts to cripple our ...
