Re: Persecution of the Rohingya

I heard an interesting opinion the other day, from a non-Buddhist. He said, "Jesus these Muslims are awful. Even the Buddhists can't get along with them." What does it mean that someone holds such an opinion? It means that there are people using the actions of Buddhists in Myanmar to justify ideas l...

Re: Hmmmm, Banned??

I'm guessing your Halloween avatar was too scary. :stirthepot: It was pretty frightening wasn't it? It is truly amazing the scenarios that run through a fellow's head when something like this happens. For instance recently we had a pretty sane and steady poster suddenly change his avatar to a nude ...

Hmmmm, Banned??

Next door at Dharma Wheel, I have recently been issued a ban and my IP has been banned as well. I have been unable to contact the admins, and have no idea what is going on. Anyone who can contact DWM on my behalf and ask them to contact me here would do me a great kindness.

dharmawheel offline

Dharmawheel is offline. Please inform David. From the error I am getting, it looks like a possible denial of service attack.

Re: Reasons why you do not want to have kids?

I don't want to have kids because the world is overpopulated as it is and we are drowning in our own muck as a result.

Greetings, But you're correct, my Buddhist vernacular isn't quite par yet. Mantra probably wasn't the word I should've used We have all been there. You learn by asking. Yep, that's my mantra. :jumping: Metta, Retro. :) Editorial note: This represents a marked change of direction from Retro's old ma...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

Is there, or has there ever been, a pure, untainted food? When I really reflect on what is on my plate, and how it got there, I almost always realize that eating isn't really the source of pleasure I believe it to be. It is mindless consumption that permits me to turn sustenance into an amusement. ...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

Nasty! I don't know which is worse, the insect fragments or the rodent hairs. Well I'd say the rodent hairs. You see where there is rodent hair, there is a rodent about. Now if that rodent followed the same processing path as the peanuts, well... there's more than hair present. Ratwurst anyone? (mu...

Re: Antidepressants

Something no one seems to be paying attention to is that many people who use SRIs have been on an number of them at different times. They presumably hunt around until they find one that works well. Now, if you run a study by dosing people with, say, Effexor, and it only works for, say 10% of the peo...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

It's no surprise to me that they disregard the dark side of meat production. Everyone does that. I mean, how many people know what the legal limit for insect fragments in peanut butter is? For the curious, the limit, in a 500g (roughly one pound jar) is 150 insect fragments. They are allowed 5 roden...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

It's worse than that, maybe. Your average fryer is 6-8 weeks old. Most laying hens are given one season of laying, at least in the big operations. So they might live a year. Small chicken raisers often let the hens go several years. As they age they produce fewer but larger eggs. Because breeds are ...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

Calculations show that the amount of food necessary to raise a calf from birth to slaughter weight would feed me (a typical male) from birth to age 75. That's one head of cattle. Holy crap. I thought that I was somewhat versed in these kinds of statistics, but for some reason I've never heard that ...
