Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?

Thanks Tilt for your comprehensive summary. :anjali: And thank you. The above was part of a debate I was having on the quite dead E-Sangha forum with some rather rigid, hardline Mahayanists who insisted that the Mahayana characterization of the Hinayana was appropriate description of the Theravada ...

Re: In the Pali Canon, is there anything that disagrees with the Mahyana teachings?

Hi guys, My question is, in the Suttas, is there any snippets that go against the Bodhisatva theme of the Suttas? or completely contradict it? Or that the Nibanna experienced by the Buddha is not the same as that of an Arahant? I do wonder sometimes how come the Buddha never gave teachings (in the ...

Re: Can someone attain Once returner if he or she do sex?

Being a parent is not the same as having sex. It just means you had sex before.

Going on the middle path doesn't necessarily equate to having sex. Even for a lay follower. It really depends on how serious you are in the practice.

Re: Dictionary of Pali Proper Names

Thanks Bhante for this resource. Just wondering, how are these two different? http://www.palikanon.com/english/pali_names/aa/a1_ad.htm http://www.aimwell.org/DPPN/a.html I'm looking for a resource with names and places in the Pali canon, both these seem to have more than I'm looking for - wanted to ...

Re: your home altar/shrine

Thought of posting this since I want to start a daily refuge/sutta recitation routine. The black rock statue is from Sarnath (place where the Buddha gave his first sermon) when I visited India in 2004. The sandalwood statue is from Polonnaruwa (one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka) a few years a...

Pali names for boys

My sister is pregnant with a boy and is asking me for suggestions. I'm looking for Pali names that are relatively simple to pronounce - any ideas?

Mods - feel free to move this to another subforum if you think this isn't appropriate here.

Re: For cricket nerds

Greetings Chula, What formulas did you use? On a related note, do you know if there are any cricket simulators nowadays where you can load a bunch of statistics into a system and have it simulate a game for you? In the past I've spent a lot of time enjoying such cricket simulations on: - Graham Goo...

Re: Can we keep "God" (Abrahamic religion) as the meditation object?

It is interesting to note that recollection of Deva lead to concentration. =============== Furthermore, you should recollect the devas:........................... His mind heads straight, based on the [qualities of the] devas. And when the mind is headed straight, the disciple of the noble ones gai...

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?

I recently found a detailed response on this from Bhante Yuttadhammo that I think does a very good job:

I think I generally agree with that perspective.

Re: Do we need the quantity or the quality?

Do we need the quantity or the quality? Just start to wonder whether we should have large number of Buddhist who are just Buddhist by name only or few Buddhist who really practice the Buddha's teaching? This question may relevant to this forum as well. Should we have fewer members who are serious p...

Re: Can we keep "God" (Abrahamic religion) as the meditation object?

I don't think God as a meditation subject can be used for jhana, but I do think those who had a belief in God could reach jhanas. Alara Kalama and Uddakaramaputta might not be great examples since it is not clear whether they had a "Brahma as creator" belief, but even if they did, they were successf...

Re: Locked threads

Hi Chula, I realize there are different interpretations of the reasons why the Buddha did not answer Vacchagotta, but since the thread is supposed to be an introduction should it not point out that it is actually controversial? On the other hand, many here would say that it is Ven Thanissaro's inte...

Re: Locked threads

I respect the amount of work that was put into that thread (especially the comparisons with the Upanishads), but in some places it seems to give an opinion by criticizing other interpretations without proper research. For instance: "The Ānanda Sutta (SN. 44.10), has been the basis for a number of sp...

Re: Locked threads

Threads sometimes get locked for any number of reasons. It might be a discussion that goes in circles, devolving into wrong speech, it might be that the question raised was answered and / or often times it is at the request of the OP (person who started the thread). We prefer to not lock threads bu...

Locked threads

Why do we have threads that are locked for everyone except for a few? Doesn't it defeat the purpose of a forum?
