Re: Tulku system in Theravada buddhism?

Isn't it the case that the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions have an aim of ensuring the enlightenment of all living beings, therefore the need for a Dalai Lama and Bodhisatvas? I've been told something along these lines by a New Kadampa monk in the UK.

Re: Tulku system in Theravada buddhism?

In any Buddhist country if an infant starts mysteriously reciting Buddhist texts and acting like a monk then their parents will take them to a monastery. It is simply that the Tibetans made an active effort to identify such children. As for predicting exactly where one will be reborn that is anothe...

I've done some research into NLP, I have a masters in comp sci... if you are interested in NLP it will involve a whole load of math. I highly recommend you have a look at coursera for a course on NLP by literally the people who have written the books on NLP. :)

Re: Killing and Corruption in Sri Lanka

Should I go there? Not looking to ordain, just take some pretty pictures, and enjoy the experience. This post makes me want to stay away. Absolutely go there... I painted a bleak picture but it is safe for Tourists, the things I mentioned are to do with politics and a few bad apples who go over the...

Re: Access to Insight iOS App needs maintainer

Not exactly an improvement for the iOS app, but I've always wanted to classify ATI content based on prominent character names to be able to browse the whole thing by character. We can probably do this for other criteria as well... I also want to cluster the content just to see what appears. This is ...

Things continue this way... in 100 years or so, Buddhism's survival may depend much much more on the West.

Re: Child Brides : Hells On Earth

^Yes arranged/child marriages have been common throughout history. We should be thankful that we live in an age where choice in marriage is valued. It is very sad that this is not the case all over the world. Muhammad married Aisha at a very young age. Could this be one reason why child marriages r...

Re: Child Brides : Hells On Earth

Very tragic. This also happens in Ethiopia and some other parts of Africa too. Some girls are married off so young, when their body is not ready for intercourse and then they get fistula where their body can no longer hold in urine or feces. They urinate and defecate on themselves. And then in some...

Re: Need to get away from university party life in Canada

I had the same issue when I started University in the UK. I failed my first year because I was just having fun with new friends. But after that, I kind of got my act together and it was hard at first but I managed to do it - those friends probably disliked me a little when I no longer partook in the...

Re: Buddhist text's true author identified as Thai woman

Not in the Suttas. See: http://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=4_Sights Thank you for that link. Unfortunately there is a lot of mythological elements in Buddha's story, so much so, that I can only believe He existed - though I don't have proof that He did. In MN36 it says that his mothe r and f...

Re: the great rebirth debate

There was a pretty good blog post by Ven. Dhammika the other day about rebirth. http://sdhammika.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-buddha-on-rebirth.html I like how he presents the Buddhist concepts, issues with references to the Suttas, the Pali, and keeps it short and simple, to the point. Thanks for shar...

Re: Children

I like kids - they make me smile (the cute little ones). But the thought of them screwing up as they grow up or rather, me screwing up, makes me wonder whether or not its a good idea - safe path is not to have kids, but it might just happen as some posters have stated. So in short, as usual, I have ...

Dylan, with Petty coming in a close second. But I haven't really heard the other guys much, so I'm biased. I saw a documentary about Dylan a few years back, he just hangs out at his massive ranch now somewhere in the USA. He seemed a little gone though, you can sort of tell his lifestyle may have go...

Re: Access to Insight iOS App needs maintainer

I'm an iOS developer and love the app. I read it on the subway constantly, but always wondered why it wasn't getting updated. I could try and take over if you'd like. I guess we just need to sort out the accout stuff, etc. Hi Digity, you should try emailing anattasatta or get a mod to email for you...

greggorious, sorry about hijacking your thread like this. i experienced some interesting mind states from his guided meditations but it was all just equanimity practice. nibbana isn't equanimity, and you shouldn't be equanimous with whatever comes up in the meditation, ie. you need to develop disce...

Re: S.N Goenka

i've been to two Goenka retreats and i can't believe i went back the second time as the first time was bad enough. i don't consider it dhamma because it's not in line with what Buddha taught. he's like Thich Nhat Hanh - basically his own weird religion/off-shoot of Buddhism... I've not exploited Go...

Re: S.N Goenka

S.N Goenka's meditation retreats were secular - he had a way of making it secular and he took teachings from several religions and concentrated on any commonality rather than teach any one particular teaching. But he had trained under a Burmese Monk (I forgot his name, sorry). AFAIK, Goenka teaches ...
