Re: Why Dhammapada is so appealing to foreigners?

Now I remember the first Dhammapada quote that I read, when I was very young: "Be an island unto yourself" I was a rebel without God or religion, raised in a Catholic country (Spain), and that phrase resonated with my independent and anarchist spirit. That isolated quote by itself didn't m...

Re: Why Dhammapada is so appealing to foreigners?

Westerners are exposed to Dhammapada quotes at many different places, from Facebook, to a fortune cookie, a banner in a NewAge site, or the Instagram of an influencer. They are rarely exposed to Suttas, but most Dhammapada quotes are short, and they can easily be appealing and make sense to non-Budd...

Re: Abortion

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but I was in a retreat with Ajahn Brahm where he said that a consciousness cannot enter into a womb until the fetus has developed a centralized nervous system that can host a sentient being. Meaning that during the first weeks you are not killing any ...

Re: married but separated?

Are you saying consorting with prostitutes does not lead to states of woe? I've found this study by Ven. Phramahā Yota Payutto where it says: "A single man having sexual affairs with prostitutes does not violate the third precept because the third precept is meant to promote family int...

Thank you for the information.

Is it possible to know the departure date? I will have free time the last week of this month. I could visit him then, if he is still at Wat Pa Ratanawan

Re: Ajahn Sumedho moving back to England permanently?

I must be lucky, then  During mt my last retreat at Wat Pa Ratanawan, besides listening his teachings, I had quite direct interaction with him: accompanying him during morning pindabat with a bag to help collect the food, casual talks while driving the golf car to bring him to his room... I w...

There can be beauty in decay. From an old tree, to the smiling expression of an elderly person

Re: How to arise samvega in approximately 1 second.

In my case, contemplation of aging and decay, neither Asubha or Paṭikkūlamanasikāra, do not lead to samvega. The same as contemplating rotten flowers doesn't lead to lack of admiration for the fresh and beautiful flowers.

So far that doesn't work for me

Ajahn Sumedho moving back to England permanently?

There is this video of Ajahn Sumedho saying goodbye to the sangha at Wat Pa Ratanawan

It seems like he does not plan to return.

Does anyone has some information? If he is still at Wat Pa Ratanawan, I would like to pay him a visit

Re: Buddhist Flowchart Diagram for Engineers

A small detail: I think that the red arrow coming down from the hindrances should not go to the "intention to transcend..." line but down to "You are here" block. Having had the intention to follow the path does not assure that the intention will be maintained. Like this: https:/...
