Re: Human life span only 10 years?

In 1993 geneticists at UCSF in California learned how to turn genes on and off for aging in round worms. It stands to reason that the same could be done for humans by now, 20 years later. The worm lived, healthily and youthfully twice past its life expectancy. It only began to age and die when they ...

Re: the great rebirth debate

Ben, Quite frankly I can't think of anything more substantial than my own experience. I think this is why the Buddha said that he was open to being questioned and encouraged people to try the path for themselves. Buddhism is, as you certainly know, an experiential path, not a revealed religion. If y...

Re: the great rebirth debate

I "believe" in rebirth, but nothing at all like in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Buddha didn't teach anything like that. How quickly or slowly a rebirth takes place is all about the kammas made before the death took place. Each one is unique to the being that died. There's no easy, cut and dried...

Re: Does smoking violate fifth precept?

During the Buddha's time and in the region in which he taught, soma was used extensively in the Vedic traditions. It is believed by historians and religious scholars that soma was the plant and the drink both which were very likely ephedra or something very much like it. It was known as a cause for ...

Re: Does smoking violate fifth precept?

Of course smoking when the vinaya was created is a whole lot different today. The tobacco in many regions that produce it is treated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides that were not available in the Buddha's time. Undoubtedly this changes from place to place, but I know in the US that tobacco,...

Re: would learning jhana solely from sutta be possible?

I answered the OP directly. I'll state it again. Not likely, improbable, ill-advised, but not impossible. The Buddha wasn't a Buddhist. What did he do? He tried different things until it worked. What I am seeing here seems to be a cyclical debate between those who say you do need all the toys, names...
